Nick's answer was simple, but certain, and his jaw was set as he said, "Nothing." It was true, wasn't it? He hadn't given it up for time or for near-death experience. He hadn't surrendered responsibility for love or parenthood. Nick had never bowed before injustice, pressure, pain and horror. Fury was not willing to stop for God himself, but he wasn't like Tony and Billy. He didn't pretend to the righteousness the Avengers aspired to or any other of the metahumans who believed they were the "good guys." Nick Fury was just a man trying to make a difference, who wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty to do it.
