Nick had no time to commiserate on Barton's slowness or Tony's shirt, he just paused to give directives to some of his agents and headed down underground. On the way up they passed emergency workers bringing up passengers from the stopped train, but Kaplan wasn't among them. Which meant that Kaplan was still stuck down there with the lunatic. Fantastic. New objectives: get Kaplan out. Take down terrorist. Diffuse bomb.
Of course, when they got down to the deserted tunnel, the subway train still and eerie like a ghost train. He held up his hand to halt Tony and pulled a pistol from a shoulder holster and handed it back to him, muttering as he did so, "We've got to find out where he's set bombs, if at all. We'll have to question him. If I get trigger happy, reign me in. Now cover me, I'm going in to find Kaplan." He ducked down and made his way towards the train, going car to car and finding all but one empty, and this one contained Billy and a woman who looked as if she were going to die at any moment. It took coaxing but Nick convinced Kaplan to come with him and leave the woman.
They'd nearly made it back to Tony when a shadow stepped apart from others deeper in the tunnel and the crazed man rushed at Nick with a knife. He pushed Billy away and took a knife thrust in the chest, wincing as he swung back his fist and punched the maniac in the face. "Where's the bomb?" he roared but the man only giggled, on the ground, and announced it was too late before he began counting down from ten. Fuck.
Nick turned and grabbed Billy's arm with one hand, practically dragging him along and then grabbing Tony with the other as they passed him. They wouldn't make it out. They had to get back up to the higher levels, back up to the street. They wouldn't fucking make it out. 5...4...3...2...1.
