What Matt was feeling could be described as a sort of numbness that probably only came with denial; one of the stages of grieving, perhaps. After all, his search for Lynne had gotten no results, she was nowhere to be found, and judging from the other similar disappearances, she would never come back again.
He'd fallen out of love with her long ago, but he still loved her very much - something he didn't realize until he found her on this cruise, they had fights, they made up, they tried being civil, and finally had turned into friends. Just days ago.
Juggling this with stupid sounds he thought he was hearing, only to turn around abruptly and see nobody there with guns, was taking its toll on Matthew. He really wanted to disappear too.
Sitting on one of the deck chairs, hands on his eyes, Matt didn't pay attention to the noises around him until he heard a female voice describing things as if she was leaving proof of the events of this cruise for posterity.
He dropped his hands as soon as she talked about finding a body and looked at her, face distorted into fear. "You found a body?!" He'd heard her say she was blind. He thought he might as well ask the right questions. "Do you know if it was male or female?"
The entire time, Matt sort of prayed for her to say male.
