The tension in the air after the realizations officially hit them both was practically palpable. It was probably impossible for the situation not to be uncomfortable and Lynne wondered if maybe they were wasting their time trying to be friends. Maybe it would never, ever work, no matter how hard they tried. This felt like trying to rekindle a friendship with someone she'd been attached to at the hip only to have a years-long falling out with. In reality, it was just that, even if she wasn't willing to let herself admit it just then.
The waitress came over and was equally as welcome an interruption as she was an annoyance for her timing, to Lynne. She didn't look away from Matthew, although she supposed she was looking more past him than at him. Now she'd forever be wondering 'what if.' What if she hadn't been so clingy? What if he'd told her how he felt about it? What if they'd slowed things down? Would they be married and have children by now...or would things be the same; two familiar strangers having coffee and trying not to push each other's buttons?
As the waitress left only to return quickly with refills for their drinks and depart again, Lynne looked down. "Aaaawkward..." she muttered with a cock of her eyebrows and a half-smile.
