Gregory gave the waitress his order, then turned back to Megan. He thought he knew where this conversation was heading. Quite often, people who lived through disasters blamed God for allowing the disaster to happen, or even for causing the disaster. How unfortunate, he thought, that such people accepted the existence of God, but rather than worshiping Him, chose to use Him as a convenient scapegoat. People like that rarely gave God any credit when things were going well in their lives, but were quick to heap the blame on Him when things turned bad. Megan's last comment led Gregory to believe that Megan fell into that category, but it was best not to make assumptions.
"Allowed to happen? To make a ship of this size nearly capsize, the waves must have been enormous. I'm sure there's nothing the crew could have done to prevent it. We often take nature for granted, but sometimes we are powerless against the tremendous forces it exerts. We're only human, after all."
