Lisa looked at Chelsea in surprise. Had the accident done something to Chelsea's hearing? But if so, why hadn't that healed with everything else? The sirens sounded distant, but they weren't hard to hear. Lisa was just about to tell Chelsea that the sirens were going that moment, and just listen for them in the distance, but two things stopped her: the realization that she couldn't tell what direction the sirens were coming from, and the captain's remark about not hearing any sirens.
"But..." she started to reply to the captain, but then looked around. Everyone was looking at her; some of them were giving her funny looks as if she were crazy. Her face turned beet-red. "I...I'm sorry. I must have some kind of ringing in my ears. I'll, uh, check with one of the doctors." She looked down, focusing her eyes on the deck in front of her. She was mortified, and scared. All those people staring at her... it was even worse than spending time in the Mirror Room. At least in the Mirror Room, all the eyes were her own. Well, maybe.
