Matt had already noticed that if someone laughed after Lottie spoke, she would think they were laughing at her. But he laughed anyway, because her thoughts on soldiers were quite hilarious to him.
"You've met me on vacation, and for what I suspect amounts to ten minutes. How do you know I'm not structured and stiff?" He chewed on some more food before continuing. "I were the same person socially as I am at my job, you'd be frightened." He stared deeply at her. "I cannot be that much of a free-spirit and/or rebel, otherwise I wouldn't be able to follow orders. And that's what I do half the time. But yeah, on vacation? I let myself go, who doesn't?"
Very deep first impression, indeed. Matt hadn't thought about her half as much. "Oh, and? You can't make a career out of war and not have a cause." He smiled. It was his truth, anyway. He wasn't like the poor kids sent to Iraq with basic training in hopes of a better life. He had gone to the Academy, he wanted this for himself for what it was.
And there it was, more laughter. Lottie made the most hilarious connections inside her head. "It's just a motorbike. And a joke. A motorbike, and a joke." To be honest being called a rebel without a cause was quite ridiculous, and Matt didn't like it. Especially if he was going to be called that because he rode a motorcycle and whatever else he'd said.
