Lisa pondered for a moment whether it would be a good idea for Chelsea to know how she looked. The truth was, she didn't look good, but how could she after all she had been through over the last few hours? Would it cause Chelsea to despair more than she already was? But then, not knowing would likely be even worse, and Chelsea had a right to know what condition she was in.
"Well, honey, none of us are looking our best at the moment...but I'll tell you what, I'll try to find a little mirror so you can see for yourself." Lisa started looking through nearby drawers and cabinets. "Hey, I found your tennis shoes... oh good, here's a mirror." It was one of those little makeup mirrors with the battery-powered lights on the edges that you could leave sitting on a dresser or fold up and take on trips. She moved back over to Chelsea's bedside and said, "Now remember, the accident was just a few hours ago, so you've still got some swelling that will be going away soon. I think you're going to be a lot better in no time. OK, now, ready?" She waited for Chelsea's acknowledgment, and then held the mirror up with one hand, two or three feet over Chelsea's face. She put her other hand on Chelsea's shoulder in what she hoped was a comforting gesture.
