An Early Morning Phone Call
Who: Az (some sleeping!Jeb) Closed When: Six AM on the dot Where: Az and Jeb's suite
‘Mama’s dancing’ with a baby on her shoulder…’
Alannah Myles had a fantastic sound to her, and Az loved to listen to female rockers from the nineteen eighties. Now, however, was not the time for throaty female voices and killer guitar riffs. Six o’clock in the morning was time for curling up against the warmer body beside her in bed, maybe waking him up for a little fun before more sleep. Not this odd and unpleasant waking up concept. ‘The sun is setting like molasses in the sky…’
With a murmured curse, the woman finally opened her eyes, reluctantly picking her cheek up off of Jeb’s shoulder. Slipping out of the arms wrapped around her was more difficult, at least without waking her bedmate up. He was such a light sleeper at times, but she had some experience at sneaking out of bed to leave for work without waking him up. Success was never guaranteed, but she did manage it on the odd occasion.
Thankfully this was one such time.
Slipping from between the lush covers, she padded naked over to the still ringing phone, scooping it up in her hand before sneaking out of the bedroom. While she pulled on a familiar silk robe, Az tapped the phone’s screen and answered the call. This was her personal number, and there were only about a handful of people that her assistant was allowed to give it out to. So whoever it was, they had to know her, but why would they be calling her now?
“Hello?”
“Adelia,” came the familiar voice, so unique that she recognized it instantly. Despite the fact that she had last heard it three years before. “It is good to hear your voice again.”
“Father,” came her acknowledgement, confusion showing in each curve of the title. “I don’t understand, why have you called?” It was not that she wished he had not, but that he never did. Besides one accidental meeting that turned into a dinner out, three years in the past, they had not seen or spoken to each other since she had been all of six years old.
His voice was heavy then, and uneasiness gripped at her stomach, as many possibilities cropped up in her mind. Very few of them good. “This might be better via video conference. Can you get to a computer and be ready in ten minutes?”
Az nodded, before registering that he would not be able to see the action. “Yes, ten minutes.”
“Good, I will see you then.” Her father clicked off a moment later, without waiting for her to dredge up a farewell. Leaving the woman to stare down at the flat device in her palm and wonder just what had happened to cause him to break his silence. It was a double handful of seconds later that she shook her head to clear the clouds, and set about getting dressed.
Cyamites would probably be the best place to use her laptop to conduct this mysterious video call. Her long fingers brushed a wayward lock of hair out of her face and behind her ear with a sigh, she really needed coffee.
Something told her that without it she would be lost. Az was not exactly a morning person.
