It wasn't quite like a slap to the face. Or a punch to the gut. Not that Eve had ever been punched in the gut, but she'd know if it felt like that. Nah, it felt more like the sting of a bee, knowing that Jack had other plans with someone else for tonight - and Eve wasn't sure why in the hell she cared, either way, which only made everything worse.
Sighing, she backed away against the wall. "I'm sorry." She said, trying very hard to mean it, but unsure whether she could even fake it right now. This had also just reminded her that she'd been so wrapped up in Jack since the day before that she hadn't even tried to see the other people she'd met before. Not Graham, or Cameron, or even Molly, whom she had liked quite a bit. Not that she wanted to go to any event with Molly, but maybe Graham. She'd have liked that, he was engaging as well as flirtatious and Eve liked that very much.
But now...Well, now she'd be going alone and she didn't even know it. Because she sure as hell wasn't going to ask Jack. And she expected him not to ask her either, not after she had witnessed his previous date being cancelled. That was just tacky, and Jack didn't seem to do tacky.
Either way, at least not going didn't cross her mind. Oh, no, even alone at a party was much better than alone in a room in a cruise. Eve Morrison did not spend these kinds of events alone in her room.
