Jack smiled, complete with a "You're welcome Eve."
The truth was, it was not simply Jack's inbuilt nature that made him try to be aware of the needs of others. To try to do good, and treat people well. Part of it (okay, most of it) he liked to blame on his younger sister Katie for always smacking him upside the head and reminding him since they had been in kindergarten and pre-school respectively that people needed to be good to each other. Her determination to make the world a better place, as well as his, was directly influenced by his parents.
Paul and Elizabeth had been big on teaching their three children that they were only as good as they treated others. The 'do unto others' bit without any specific religion attached to it. It was a core value that they had been sure to try to pass on to their children, and had for the most part.
He knew there was bad out in the world, that people sometimes did horrible things to each other. But, he refused to believe that there was more bad than good out there, and that every one could better the world one step at a time.
"I'll be right back," he told her, before heading for and out the door. The key card firmly in hand.
