"Designer, huh?" He pretended to be impressed but only for a moment before dropping the pretense. "They could be from Target for all I'd know but they look damn good on you."
He moved to lean against the railing next to her and stared out at the dark surface of the ocean. "What am I up to? I'm up to whatever I can find, I guess. You look like you're dressed for a rock show but you're out here all alone. What's up with that?"
The way that she looked tonight, the expression he'd caught just briefly on her face before she'd known he was there, suggested she wasn't happy. But maybe he'd simply caught her in a moment of reflection. What did he know?
