Cath couldn't agree more with the targeting of innocents. Saints, he'd joined in the first place to avenge his mother's death. She was an innocent woman walking home from church. But no, no one cared about her, because she was Catholic and the daughter of a PIRA officer. Her life didn't matter to this fool who wasn't looking at it from the other side.
Ronnie, bless his soul, had his heart in the right place. Cath gave him a wry smile, shaking his head a bit at the comparison. "I'd say more than my moment, boyo," he admitted. "But you have the idea." The boy's faith in him was amazing, if a little naive.
Cath snorted at Sean's observation. "I don't want to talk about it," he agreed. "And not for the reasons you think." He knew exactly what he'd done, all the destruction he caused. The only time he wanted to think about it was when he was trying to atone for it.
His arm went around Mae as she turned away. He knew her well enough to know Sean'd hit a nerve. "And she's right," he countered. "You don't know what you're talking about. You yanks already had your revolution. Only since you bloody won, you don't see it like that, do you?" Just because he wasn't proud of the life he'd led, didn't mean he couldn't point out the obvious here. "History is written from the perception of the winners."
Cath glared at Sean. "Nothing anyone thinks, says or does will ever make it all right," he snapped. "This is being honest, because we're relying on each other for survival. And respect..." Well, respect had been part of it. A little less so now.
It was time for another reality check. "Under what authority?" he demanded. "We've committed absolutely no crimes on American soil. Neither of us have a record back in Ireland under our real names. We're not even citizens of your country. Nor are we in your country."
That was all moot, but he wasn't done yet. "What have we done, since we came onboard this ship, to justify house arrest? Besides, where are we going to bloody go? Do you think we would still be here if there was anywhere to go?"
The last statement made him scowl and turn away, burying his face in Mae's hair and taking a breath to calm himself. Sean was understandably upset, but really, hadn't he already done that?
