Penny absently moved her hand through Jarro’s fur as she stared blankly into the space in front of her. To anyone around her she may have actually looked pensive or busy considering the mountain of books open in front of her. However, Penny’s thoughts were far from the books and their contents and farther still from her familiar in her lap. Dax had gone with Bones and the others to Azkaban and after his last brush with the darker element in their lives, it left a horrible feeling in the pit of her stomach. It was true that Dax was more than capable of protecting himself. He was an auror and that didn’t come without its own dangers. There was a reason they called them Dark Wizard catchers. He was used to going after the dark elements of their world, but this was different. Much different. It was Azkaban. There would be more within the walls of Azkaban than Aurors and Death Eaters. Dementors were nasty creatures and while they perhaps were able to be guarded against and she had no doubt that Dax was capable and able to use the Patronus charm. Still they were able to do things to you, to bring back the worst memories and the worst in yourself. Dax had a dark history and it would make overpowering him, if they could do it, even stronger. A nip against her skin made Penny jump and she looked down startled to see a small bit of red against her skin. It took a second for her then to register the low irritated sounds her cat was making, her arms opening instantly to allow him down where he’d likely been trying to go for some time considering the way he was positioned. “Go on,” Penny said her voice flat and void of emotion as she stood up and moved to grab her wand so she could close the small wound. It was her own fault, he had no other way of letting her know he wanted down and she should have been paying attention to the first, less biting sort of signs he wanted down. Moving back to the bed, Penny sat down and lifted one of the books she’d been reading. She lifted it back into her lap and once again began reading, her hand moving to the side to grab her quill so she could make notes in the margins as she so often did when referring back to things. She was researching magic that might help ensure their safehouses remained such without the need for the fidelius charm and risking the lives of ‘secret keepers’. The first few pages went perfectly. That was until her gaze strayed momentarily as she reached for more ink and as she looked back, her gaze briefly landed on Dax’s journal on his bedside table. Almost immediately, her thoughts turned to him and then as before, everything else seemed to fall to the wayside. Yes, Penny had faith in Dax and in his abilities as a wizard, that was not the problem. Many capable wizards had already died in the fight against Voldemort. She just didn’t want him to be among them. She didn’t want to lose him too. |
