Who: Dave and Kurt
When: Backdated to July 4
Where: Washington DC
What: Some serious conversation and then some kissing
Rating: SFW, possible trigger warning for discussion of gay bashing. Nothing in-depth or explicit.
Dave had never really considered himself to be a patriotic person, but after the Supreme Court’s recent rulings on DOMA, he felt suddenly very proud of his country. It wasn’t as though the one instance had erased all of the messiness that was still in the US, of course, but it was a start.
He was having a pretty good time so far celebrating the holiday in the nation’s capital, and it was pretty sweet that they could do so on short notice thanks to Kurt and Finn’s dad. It was crowded in the bar they were in, though, so he said loudly, so Kurt could hear him, “I’m gonna get some fresh air.” After a pause, he added, “You wanna come with?”
“Oh! Yeah-yes!” said Kurt, excited that Dave would think to ask him. He set his glass tumbler next to Finn’s hand and made sure he saw it before waving and pointing to the door.
He followed Dave through the door, shoving his hands into his pockets and inhaling deeply once they got outside. The bar was a little overcrowded, and the fresh air was nice even if it was hot and humid outside.
Kurt glanced at Dave, but then tried to look around at the buildings surrounding them instead. He wasn’t sure how long after kissing it took for people to feel normal about each other again, but whenever he was with Dave or thought about Dave, pretty much all he could think about was the fluttering in his stomach that he’d felt when they had kissed playing spin the bottle.
“It’s nice out here,” Kurt finally said lamely.
Dave nodded slightly, his hands in his own pockets. “It is. Probably the same temperature as it was inside, but it feels a little cooler because there aren’t so many people around, you know?” He frowned a bit then, inwardly chastising himself for just talking about the weather when there were so many other interesting topics to choose from.
Ever since Blaine had admitted to Dave that he had feelings for Kurt, though, Dave had started thinking about whether he was in the same boat. He and Kurt had been friends for a few months and had always gotten along, but Dave had been dating Milo so he’d never entertained the concept of what it would be like to date Kurt. Clearly, now that wasn’t an issue.
Grasping for a different topic, he blurted out, “So if we got married, we would have rights now! I mean, not you and me getting married...”
Kurt was so caught off guard that he made a slight choking noise as he felt his face (or maybe his entire head) flush beet red. He didn’t even understand where Dave’s thought process was going - had he asked Kurt to come out here with the purpose of TALKING about marriage? How could he jump from the weather to referring to he and Kurt getting MARRIED one sentence later?!
He coughed and then said, “I...well, yes, in New York, at least.”
There was an awkward silence, and Kurt wasn’t sure if ignoring everything else Dave had said would make it better or worse.
Finally, Kurt said, “Umm, it’s cool how much things have changed in the past few years. I mean, three years ago I was still getting the crap beat out of me by boys in school...I never thought DOMA getting struck down would even be possible. And now living in New York and meeting people like you...who are like me -- I never thought it’d be possible, I guess.”
Puck and Finn had seemed happy when the Supreme Court news broke, but it did feel different to be talking about it with Dave.
Dave turned a little to face Kurt. They hadn't really talked about this kind of thing before, not together at least, but he knew that kind of stuff had been in his past. He figured he would have heard if Kurt was still being bullied at an arts school in New York, at least.
"I was, too. Um, but I guess I got more like verbal stuff for the most part... When the guys on the football team found out they really weren't that cool with it. Got a lot of graffiti on my lockers, lot of shittalking, you know?" It wasn't the kind of stuff he usually brought up on a night out with his bros, but it felt somehow freeing to discuss it, even though he didn't go into detail.
Kurt’s face softened in response to Dave’s revelation. People pretty much assumed Kurt was gay when they saw his clothes or heard him speak, and sometimes people were totally assholes about it. They were probably even meaner to Dave, if they found out their initial assumptions about him were wrong.
People could be so cruel when their perceptions were challenged.
“I’m so sorry,” Kurt said to Dave, taking a step toward him and then just giving in and giving him a hug. “College is way better than high school, isn’t it?” he asked, laughing a little. He was so lucky to find friends who shared his interests and were genuinely nice, but he was almost constantly amazed by how many friends he had, including Dave.
Dave hadn’t been expecting the hug; sure, they’d just been sharing some emotional stuff, but he figured they’d just have a few awkward smiles and then move on to something else. The hug was nice, though, and he leaned his head against Kurt’s as he moved his arms around the other boy to return the gesture. “College is way better, yeah,” he said with a slight grin, copying Kurt’s words unconsciously. “And I’m sorry, too. But it’s done, right?”
“God, yes,” said Kurt. Suddenly flustered, he let go of Dave and took a step back, although they were still much closer than they’d been when they first came outside.
Kurt started to speak and then stopped. Then, figuring that Dave had just made a non-sequitur comment about marriage, Kurt figured it would be okay to say what he thought.
“I’m really glad my first kiss was with you, Dave,” he said quickly.
Dave was at a momentary loss of words at first; he was beginning to think that he was very glad that he had been Kurt's first kiss, too, but the fact that his roommate had developed feelings for the same man kept weighing in his mind.
It seemed rude not to answer, so after what felt like forever but probably wasn't very long, Dave replied, "Thank you. Um, that's really sweet of you to say." There; that was probably a safe statement, if he could just leave it at that. He reached out and patted Kurt gently on the upper arm, fondly. "You look really nice tonight." Oops.
Kurt had already been smiling at Dave for saying he was sweet, and he felt like his stomach had burst into butterflies when Dave said he looked nice.
He looked back toward the door to the bar, suddenly paranoid that Puck and Finn were going to appear, but the door was closed - nobody was here except for him and Dave.
What was Kurt supposed to say? It seemed lame to tell Dave that he looked nice, too - he’d obviously only be saying it because Dave had said it first, and maybe it’d seem like he didn’t really mean it.
Finally, he felt his smile grow broader and heard himself saying, “See, that’s exactly what I mean - you know exactly how to make me feel great.”
Dave really hadn’t intended for the conversation to go in this direction, but he couldn’t help but grin in response. Kurt looked happier than he had seen him all night just now and it was nice to know that he was having that kind of effect on him.
“You usually have the same effect on me, too,” he admitted, a little embarrassed. It felt so brazen, somehow, to be flirting with the boy his roommate also had feelings for, so soon after he’d just gotten out of a relationship. “Maybe that’s why I like talking to you so much.”
Kurt hadn’t really flirted with anyone since Cam (well, maybe Jesse and maybe Blaine, but not that explicitly). He felt partly afraid, like pushing the envelope to get what he actually wanted might make Dave disappear forever, just like Cam had.
But he wasn’t going to let this moment slip through his fingers.
Sliding closer to Dave, Kurt said, “Maybe if we both like it so much, we should talk more often...Or maybe even touch.” He reached out his right hand for Dave’s left, and brushed their fingers before finally just tangling them together.
A firework exploded in the distance - it must be over the National Mall. While their faces were both illuminated in blue, Kurt smiled at Dave and squeezed his hand.
“This feels great, too.”
It was obvious to Dave by this point that Kurt was giving no consideration to Blaine at this point, judging from how he was looking at Dave so intently. With that conclusion made, Dave decided to stop worrying about his roommate, too, and just focus on what was happening.
He glanced down at their hands and smiled, bringing his eyes up to Kurt's as another set of fireworks exploded somewhere they weren't. "It does," he agreed. Stepping closer, he lowered his head slightly to kiss Kurt, lightly, just in case this wasn't what he wanted. "Does that, too?"
Kurt felt like it was possible his smile might actually split his face. He gently brought his hand away from Dave’s to rest on Dave’s chest instead.
He cupped Dave’s jaw with his other hand and leaned in, looking at his eyes with a little bit of disbelief that this was actually happening.
“It does, but I bet we could do even better,” he said just before kissing Dave back. This kiss lasted much longer than the first one, and Kurt felt like mouth was burning, like every part of him that was touching Dave was on fire.
Dave’s free hand came to a rest on Kurt’s waist, gently at first, and he maintained the handholding with his other hand all the while. He liked the intimate feeling it gave him while they kissed, his mind completely unpreoccupied now with thoughts of anyone else besides Kurt and the fact that they were standing outside in a busy area, kissing. Dave wasn’t in the closet by any means, but he was still somewhat shy about public displays of affection as a rule. This, though, seemed different.
The second kiss went on longer than he’d expected, and finally Dave pulled away with a slight sigh, wanting more. He left his hand on Kurt’s waist and marveled for a moment, internally, at their closeness. “That.... that was definitely better.”
“Mmm,” Kurt agreed. His head was bowed toward Dave’s, their foreheads still almost touching. He smiled at Dave, meeting his eyes a little shyly as he became aware that they were still standing on the sidewalk, outside of a bar, in the middle of a mostly unfamiliar city.
“Umm, I really don’t want to stop this, but maybe we should go inside?” Kurt asked quietly.
Dave wasn’t sure what this meant or how best to proceed. Now that they weren’t kissing anymore, he was thinking again about whether the best thing to do would be to ask Blaine’s permission, or to tell him what happened, before he and Kurt hung out like this again. After what had just happened, though, he was completely sure he wanted it to happen again.
Maybe they could just take it one thing at a time, starting with going inside, and see what happened. “Sure, yeah, we can do that.” He stepped away then, reluctantly, and smiled. “I’m glad you came outside with me.”
“Me too,” said Kurt, grinning.
