At first, nothing seemed to happen, and April thought maybe the spell had failed. She was just about to ask Snow to try again when the spell took effect and she let out a blood-curdling scream, her back arched as her body began burning. She hadn't felt this much pain since she was three, when her mom, drunk as a skunk, took a hot iron bar to her shoulder. April writhed on the ground for several minutes, still screaming, as the pain grew more intense, before reaching a point where she could no longer bear it, and passing out.
