Avoiding crowds was the name of the game on most holidays, but that day was not most holidays. Gio felt the intense need, for once, to be surrounded by people who were having the time of their lives. He wanted to go out and have an evening that was nothing but a good memory, and though he knew he could call on Amelia or even ask Rory to come with him to see the fireworks over the Charles River, he felt like being alone and anonymous.
So far so good. Families were picnicking in the park, eating barbecue dinners or snacks on blankets while awaiting the fireworks display. Gio felt content to wander around, stopping at booths selling all sorts of foods that should only be consumed once a year at great risk of digestive peril. He had just swiped his card at a burger stand when he looked up to see a familiar face among the crowd not too far to his right, and he did an actual double-take before he could trust himself to confirm he was looking at Allison freaking Marshall.
They had exchanged phone numbers in the not-so-distant past and Gio, unsurprisingly, hadn't heard a peep from her. Likewise, she hadn't heard a peep from him, because he had absolutely nothing constructive to say to her. And that lack of having anything worth saying persisted to the present, so Gio snapped his head away from Allison and stood stiffly as he waited for his burger. The most he could do was tilt his head a little and look away from her, but she was close. If he hadn't already paid he might have walked off (quickly), but as that was not the case, all Gio could do was hold his breath and hope he wasn't spotted.
