When John wasn't indulging in prelaid plans (which were few and far between but usually involved the bottle) or wrapped up in his caseloads, he could be found at the department's indoor range. Practice always made perfect, or so they said, and shooting was always a successful tactic when it came to blowing off steam, but firing his service weapon was also an invaluable way to narrow his focus. John went religiously to clear his head - to remove himself from the miserable world he was part of until there was only himself, his weapon, and the target he punctured neat marks into. He never even noticed the occupants in the other stalls until he was packing up and leaving, which was what happened now. John was anything but free from his cases, especially with the investigation into the second murder in overdrive, but he'd needed a moment of clarity before continuing with it, and before facing all the other strange and fascinating things the world was throwing at him.
Loading a new clip, John returned his weapon to its holster before picking up his stall. The sounds of shooting were still ongoing, so he kept his ear protection in place as he moved along the wall, but then he came to a stop as he recognized Dominic. Now, John would've been in his right mind to keep on going without second glance. He was the king of grudges and was still bitter about the whole incident involving his suspension, especially how his friend was involved in it. Dominic had only done his job, but that was besides the point and left the detective actively avoiding him. It was easy with the case picking up again and the second murder sitting heavily on John's shoulders, but as always, the Lieutenant was nothing but patient and John would eventually get over his pride and wander back to the more companionable side of things.
So that was where John Martin was at. He was actively letting things go, which was why he paused and lingered. He ended up leaning against the wall, arms crossed over his chest as he watched his friend, trying out patience himself, for once. Watching someone was never as satisfying as doing it himself, but he observed Dom's actions and contemplated all that had transpired since they'd last spoken through more than email. He was riding the high and the focus so was actually in a descent mood, and when Dominic began showing signs of stopping and pulled off his ear protection, John's own came off too. "Hey."
