It hadn’t quite been a week since Kate had arrived in this place. Part of her wondered if it was even real. She felt like maybe she was still in the temple. Maybe the sacrifice had been successful and this was just some messed up afterlife. But she remembered leaving the Titty Twister with Seth. She remembered them driving off. He wasn’t here, but that all had to have been real, right? Every morning she woke up, and she was still here. Alone. Oh she had a roommate, but she hadn’t really even spoken to him yet. She was still processing everything that had happened to her, just one week ago. Her father had still been alive. Her brother Scott, he was still okay. And then...everything turned into a nightmare. Jacob Fuller was in heaven now, with Jennifer. Kate didn’t believe that God could be so cruel as to let her mama go to hell. She didn’t believe that. She couldn’t. Kate had always been the one to see the good in people. She even saw it in the Gecko brothers, who someone else might have thought were irredeemable. Kate wasn’t like most people. Jacob said it was because she had a light in her soul that would always lead her from the darkness. But who was she now? Kate Fuller, the preacher’s daughter? Katie cakes? The new little vampire slayer who had almost been sacrificed to sate the lords of the night? Who was she in this place? She didn’t know. She sat outside, playing with the cross necklace that had once belonged to her mother. She felt lost here. She might have felt lost anywhere. But she still had her faith. She had Him. And somehow, she was gonna be just fine. |
