Who: Scarlet and Scotch
When: Wibbly wobbly, timey wimey time between Jan. 2nd and the war :P
Where: Church
Why: First encounter of two Enks

Winter was hard, that was something they probably all had learned the hard way the first year after the blackout. As a girl, Scarlet had loved winter, and part of her still liked the way it looked - like the whole world was covered in pure, white innocence. But without running hot water and central heating and readily available food it was a harsh time to get through. Maybe she should think about joining a tribe, but to be honest, she didn't like this kind of human compartmentalizing.

And she wanted to be able to treat and be there for everyone, not just the people of one tribe. But sometimes she really could appreciate being part of a larger group of people. At least there was a place that was semi-warm and dry, though she had never been a very religious person she was grateful for it. Huddled in a thick jacket she went through the last supply package that Topher had given her, making sure she had enough for a while.

She looked up when she heard movement close to her, surprised to see an unfamiliar face. "Hey." she greeted, waving a gloved hand. "Are you new here? Don't think I've seen you around before."

Scarlet wasn't expecting a too friendly reaction, usually people were closed off and suspicious. Only natural with how things were at the moment. But swaying was certainly not what she had expected.

With a few quick strides she was next to the man, only then noticing the bundled up kids close to him. Oh boy. She was glad they had made it here. While life without a tribe wasn't easy, it was so much better than being out there on your own. She touched his shoulder gently, trying to steady him a little as she looked at him closely.

"Hey...are you alright? Can you hear me? I'm Scarlet." she said calmly. He was pale and his face looked gaunt, like he hadn't had a proper meal in a while. And with the kids, that only made sense. Reaching for her bag she took out a bottle of water (which was cold, but not frozen), holding it out to him. "Have a sip, but careful, it's cold. And then we'll get you and the little guys something to eat, alright?"

Daniel blinked several times in an effort to clear his vision. He flinched away from the unexpected touch to his shoulder, which of course didn't help his head. One hand shot out to grip the back of the pew to steady himself.

Once he was sure the worse was other, Daniel turned to squint at this new person. "I'm fine," he muttered, rubbing his free hand over his face before blinking slowly to get her into focus. Sometimes he really did miss contact lenses.

He frowned at the bottle as she held it out but didn't take it before looking back at her, suspicion flicking through his brown eyes, especially when she mentioned the 'little guys'. His gaze flicked briefly to check on the two children, still sleeping soundly, and he pressed his lips together in contemplation. He didn't like trusting complete strangers, not anymore. There had been a time when Daniel would give most people the benefit of initial doubt but nowadays his trust in other people was shot to pieces.

"I just need to know where I can get some breakfast, that's all," he said eventually, tiredness making his accent shift all over the place. "They'll need it when they wake up."

Scarlet waited for a moment, until the man in front of her seemed to have gotten past the dizzy spell. She wasn't expecting friendliness - not in the circumstances they were living in right now - but that didn't mean she wouldn't offer it.

"Sorry for being blunt, but you don't look fine. You look like you're about to faint from hunger and exhaustion." she said calmly, waiting for him to take the bottle from her. "Listen, I'm not out to harm you. I'm not a member of any of the tribes here, but I work as a sort of nurse for all of them. I used to be an EMT. I know you have no reason to trust me, but I can at least show you that the water is just that, water." She took the bottle, taking a sip out of it before holding it out for the man again.

"I'm Scarlet. And you'll get your breakfast with me. I still got some leftovers from curing New Year's hangovers." she added with a small grin. "Enough for the three of you. It wasn't that long that I was new here myself, so I get it."

Daniel bristled at her words, his jaw flexing as his lips pressed into a thin line. "I'm just a bit tired that's all," he muttered, watching her closely as she spoke and sipped the water. He took in her words, an eyebrow quirking at the mention of 'nurse' and 'EMT' but otherwise didn't comment. When she held out the water bottle he did take it this time, if gingerly, but still didn't drink from it.

"Da... Scotch," he replied slowly, his brow furrowing slightly. "I just need something that can eat when they wake up," he added, glancing back at the sleeping children. "It doesn't have to be a lot."

Scarlet was tempted to roll her eyes at him for being so defensive and most of all so stubborn, but she understood. If she had children to take care of she probably would be this mistrusting, too. "Look, I'm not trying to take advantage of you. But I'm not going to let you starve yourself to death. Who's taking care of the kids if you're too weak to move and get them food, huh?"

Maybe that would wake him up a little. "You need something you can eat, too. I'm sleeping on the other side of the church, so it's not like you're going anywhere. They can see you from here. Just grab a bite to eat and then I'll stop bothering you. At least until I think it's time for you to eat again."

"I'm not bloody starving myself to death," Daniel snapped, although his voice didn't rise. "And I take care of them just fine." If it was one thing he didn't like it was people implying that he couldn't look after the kids. Part of him felt like asking how she would have coped with travelling all the way from LA to here in the current state of the world but it was no-one's business but his own.

He gave a shake of head and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I was planning on having something to eat but they need to eat first," he muttered in reply before his jaw flexed again. "I'm quite capable of knowing when I need to eat, without someone thinking they do."

Scarlet sighed softly, shaking her head lightly. "That's not what I was saying. You're taking care of them just fine. You got them here and they're well fed. What I was saying is that you're not taking care of yourself. And sooner or later that will effect your ability to take care of the kids." She was still serious, but her voice had lost some of its edge.

Scotch seemed stressed enough as it was, she didn't want to add to that. "They're sleeping." she pointed out with a smile. "How about I go and get the food and you just wait here?"

"I'm just tired, that's all. We've barely been here a day after travelling through the cold," Daniel shot back, although his tone was mainly just tired.

He ran a hand through his hair and glanced back at the two children. "I know they are." He hesitated noticeably. He found it hard to trust strangers nowadays but he hated to be away from the kids, even a small distance away, much more. "I... Ok."

"Even more reason for you to eat something to generate some extra heat." Scarlet said an her voice wasn't really tolerating any more opposition. She had set her mind on giving this man some of her food (which would only spoil because she couldn't possibly eat it all by herself anyways) and so she would.

She smiled when he finally agreed. "I'll be back in a second." she muttered, going back to her own camp at the back of the church. She had a box with grilled chicken that was really good cold and a little more than half a loaf of bread. It was enough for two, but not quite to feed two children. So she took a bit of the lamb that she'd taken after the New Year's festivities as well. Everything was neatly packed in boxes, except for the bread, which was only two days old anyways. She carried everything over to Scotch, setting it down with a smile. "See, enough for all of you. So please, eat your fill, but slowly. Maybe a few small portions over the next few hours? But don't hold back to save some for the kids, there's enough, okay?"
