"Hey," Derek said sharply, frowning at his younger brother. The two were separated from the majority of the camp, and Derek didn't entirely trust everyone there. Since the sky had gone dark and the judgement day had happened, Derek didn't trust anyone. Unless they were his own flesh and blood, and Kyle was all he had left. The years they'd spent together had darkened Derek's mind considerably, and he didn't care to form friendships with anyone else. It wasn't as if he had family any more, their parents had gone long ago. Sometimes the morbid part of Derek wondered what kind of death they'd had, as he hadn't been around to see it, and other times he just wanted to forget that he'd ever had anyone close to him.
Derek was just gone twenty-three years old, and he felt about thirty. Things were hard and he'd almost been caught by one of the metal bitches before, but he was used to fighting. He'd destroyed one, along with Kyle, just two days ago. It gave him a strange kind of vindictive satisfaction, knowing that there was one less of them in the world. They had a lot to answer for, and Derek's hatred for them ran deep in his thoughts.
He nudged his younger brother in the ribs with his elbow. "Hey, what're you thinkin'?" he asked him. They were sitting, Derek still with a gun in hand, and Kyle had fallen silent again. Derek could understand him not being chatty, but he often needed constant reassurance that Kyle was alright. Derek had promised to look after him, and he was a man of his word. He'd never break a promise, at least not to Kyle.
