little cakes | day 5
Mobius roamed along in front of her as she walked towards the Green where she'd told Silena that she could meet her. She'd liked Silena thus far, and she supposed she might need to talk to Mobius next week and say something about the fact that she'd adopted a new kid. She didn't think he'd mind.
"Mobius!" She snapped her fingers at her side, and the Lab tilted his head before coming bounding back to her side, just as she saw Silena approaching. She offered Mobius a treat and waved her hand in Silena's direction. "Hey! You made it."
To say that Silena was a little tense would be a complete understatement. Not only was she kidnapped into another place of existence, she also couldn’t fight off the urge to eat the cupcake that was waiting for her in her room. This led to a whole other problem with the compulsion to tell the truth.
Normally it wouldn’t bother Silena, with a few major exceptions, Silena always regarded herself as someone that was truthful. What bothered her was the lack of consent and the need to overshare and be honest about it. It was truly making her miserable, but thankfully Sharon continued to reach out to Silena, and she welcomed the distraction of going on a walk.
She smiled, genuinely happy to see the woman who had been so kind to her since her arrival. Most of the adults she had been around here those from camp, Chiron, Mr. D and others, and Sharon seemed nice enough and Silena felt that the woman really empathized with what she was going through. “Hey!” She called out. “Thanks for inviting me, I’ve been cooped up in my room for a while.” She looked down at the dog and grinned. “This is Mobius? Your friend you were telling me about?”
"And it's not like those rooms are exactly the largest," Sharon said with an empathetic smile. "Even the room I had when I first arrived was nicer than this one. We had a bedroom and a living space at least, even though the bedroom was still shared. Then the dorm was destroyed, and it came back as a tower with the whole Victorian Attic vibe." She shook her head. "Who are you rooming with?"
She tossed a ball out in front of them so that Mobius could chase it down, and bring it back on his own time, and she nodded. "Normally he's more human, and less labrador retriever, but he's actually pretty on point for the friendly part," she looked down at the animal fondly, and stretched his ears. "This week is definitely one of the strange ones. I say, as if there are weeks that aren't strange. I think the week we spent in the 80's in New York was probably the least strange. It was just basic old 1980-something New York City. A little dangerous, but not strange in the way some things are. I picked up some good make-up. Some acid wash jeans, you know. The usual Madonna necessities."
“I mainly lived in the cabins at camp, but there were a few us all together in a large room.” She explained. “No one now, so at least I’ve been able to get some privacy. It’d be a lot harder to avoid people this week if I was rooming with someone, even if it is lonely.” Silena frowned, this honest bit was tiresome, it made her feel uneasy. Everyone already expects a child of Aphrodite to be weaker.
Silena looked down and smiled. “Can he hear us? Or remember this when he’s human again?” She asked Sharon. Not wanting to see rude, she bent down to give the retriever a little scratch under his chin. “I’m happy to meet you in person once you’re human again,” Silena said kindly. It was incredibly strange, knowing full well she was talking to a grown man as a dog. She looked back up at Sharon. “I wonder if it was similar to the New York City, it’d be weird if I saw a younger verson of my Dad walking around.”
Sharon decided that she'd just take the statements as they were, she'd offered Silena the opportunity to not walk this week, considering the truthfulness, so she'd accept and keep whatever she was given. "I'm glad you've got some privacy this week. I think that first week is difficult enough without you having to room with a total stranger. I'm fortunate enough to be with a friend, well and sort of former husband," she laughed lightly. "At least in an alternate reality Derleth gave us one time, but mostly he's a friend so it's not as strange as it could be, but it's still a little awkward at times."
She grinned as Retriever!Mobius wagged his tail. "I think he may have sort of vague memories, but I would definitely reintroduce yourself and not expect him to remember you," Sharon laughed. "Is your Dad from New York City then? Is that where you grew up before the camps…?"
Silena nodded but gave Sharon a questionable look. “Really? That isn’t awkward for you at all?” It would’ve been for her, but she was also too young to be married so that would’ve add another layer of awkwardness. Still, she couldn’t imagine having to share a room with an ex, not that Silena dated a whole lot, just another thing that made her a little odd in Aphrodite’s Cabin. What if it’d been Luke?
She shuddered at the thought. That was long over and it made her miss Charles all over again.
“He is,” Silena answered. “Yeah, it can be different for a lot of demigods, monsters are attracted to us, so once the secret’s out, you have to make it to camp before-’ She let the last part hang. “Thankfully I made it to camp. I do go visit my Dad when it can, but he wants me to be safe, so he encourages me to stay there as often as I can.” Not that she minded too much, though lately it hadn’t been a picnic, mostly her fault. There was another stabbing pain in her stomach, thinking about her Dad. “I really hope everyone’s right and no one notices.”
Sharon laughed lightly. "It might be more awkward if he was an actual former husband. There was this one week when Derleth landed us in the 50s, only instead of being ourselves, we were these alternate selves. And I was Bucky's wife. Thankfully we got along, we had a dog, we even kept the dog - although generally Bucky keeps him. So it's not as awkward as it could be," she admitted. "Not that you really have much choice with Derleth. It kind of just does things."
Sharon tossed the ball again, letting Mobius run after it, and she glanced over. "Tell me about the camps. What do you do there?"
Silena laughed. “I see, does that happen a lot?” She tried to be casual but she had to admit it freaked her out a little. This place messed with their memories? A whole life that wasn’t real, she had no idea how she would feel in that situation. “I guess that’s all any of us can do here right? Just try and go with the flow.” At least it seemed everyone was in agreement that if something weird did happen, no one would be made to feel bad or awkward about it, that was a plus.
“Mostly train. Some of us who stay there during the school year will still have some schooling but taking care of the camps, patrolling the border, that sort of thing.” She shifted uncomfortably as she spoke. “It became a little more complicated lately, one of our campers turned on us and started fighting with Kronos to destroy Olympus, he had help within the camp, so monsters were attacking a lot more often.”
"It's happened twice since I've been here - to me, anyway. But I've been here for several months, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's a possibility, but compared to some possibilities, it's not the worst. I'd rather have a fake husband - especially since it's someone I knew and liked before hand - than some of the other weeks. Most weeks have something. Most void weeks aren't too bad though. Mobius turning into a dog? In the scheme of things, there are definitely worse things to happen. But I think stay flexible, keep your wits about it, and find friends that can help you - it's the best that you can do, and you've already got at least one friend here."
Sharon threw the ball again, letting Mobius go after it and she watched Silena for a moment. "It honestly sounds like what you're used to at home will come in useful here. Sometimes there are monsters, if you have the ability to do patrols, that could be helpful."
Silena nodded. It was good and sound advice and really, and she had the feeling that it would be better for her in the long run. At least with her training and just the way her brain naturally worked, she’d could be prepared and ready for anything this place might throw at them. At least she hoped so, maybe rolling with the weirdness would be easier the longer she’s there.
She grinned, watching Mobius go after the ball. Briefly wondering what it’d be like to be a dog, doesn’t seem as fun if you don’t remember a lot of it, but not having to deal with constant hammering away that she’s used to her brain doing, maybe it’d be a nice break. “I hope so, at least with my armor and sword I can be useful if there are ever any monsters. And I can do patrols,” she said proudly. “That was a big part of camp as well, we had to patrol our borders especially after the monster attacks became more frequent.” A sigh of relief escaped her. “Thanks, Sharon, this helps. I’m still unsure about a lot of things but I think I’ll feel better once this week is over and I don’t have to deal with this cupcake mess, but it sounds like I can be of use here. Better than sitting on my bed all day.”
Sharon smiled, and then tilted her head towards her. She wasn't much of a hug person, always, but it felt right. "Would you like a hug?" She asked. "It's alright if the answer is no, but I think there are two pieces here that it's important to find, and the first is your 'family' and the second is how you can help - and when you find those things, you'll do alright - I'm sure of it. And I'm happy to help however I can."
A small part of her tensed, not because she didn’t want a hug but because it had been a while since she had one. The last hug she got was from Clarisse, shortly after she found Silena sitting alone, thinking and crying about Charlie. It had been an even longer time since an adult hugged her, and in the moment it really made her miss her father. “It’s okay,” she said, her voice cracking. “I’d like a hug.” She nodded, understanding what Sharon said was important. It didnt take long for her to reach out, ready for an embrace that she really needed ever since she arrived. As much as she wanted to cry, she also felt more relaxed and some of that tension leaving her.
