Round the campus the wolves came with a bound. They were covered all in fur, from their head to their paws, And their clothes were all hidden with curses and awe; Their eyes—how they gleamed! their teeth, how scary! Their noses likecoals, their maws blood stained like cherry! Their large pointed ears were drawn up like bows, A few of them with coats that were as white as the snow; A snear of their lips and a lowering of their heads Soon gave me to know I had everything to dread; They sprang into action, to one another they growled, And away they all flew, threw their head back and howled. I didn't mean to exclaim, driven mad by the night— “Happy New Year to all, and to all a good fright!”
