Ianto had never understood Jack's penchant for spending time on roofs, but that evening he found himself standing on the edge of the roof of the somewhat institutional building where they were all stuck. He wondered if it came with not being able to die, this fascination with high places. All he knew was that there was a strange peace that came with watching the sun fade in the distance, feeling the cooling air around him and the slight thrill of being so close to death, however temporary.
It was funny to think that he was at a place like this to get away from Jack. But Jack would never look for him up here, he wouldn't expect to find him in his own sanctuary. Maybe that was the real reason he was up here. He wasn't avoiding Jack, precisely, he just needed to think about what had happened. Even a month and a half after he'd become immortal, he wasn't sure what to make of this, what to think. And it was hard when Jack was around, because he wanted to be happy about this. He was happy that they could stay together, that he wouldn't just be another loss for Jack to endure. But he was also worried about this. How had it happened? What sort of consequences were there that had not yet made themselves apparent? He couldn't just accept that something good had happened, because good things never happened to him without some price.
He heard the door to the roof open and light footsteps, too light to be Jack but recognisable nonetheless, but he didn't turn around. He just kept looking out into the distance. "Suzie," he greeted her. It was odd that it was her, not Jack, who found him, considering she was the one he had opened up to about his misgivings about his power.
