First GLEE Club of the year!!
Who: Will and the GLEE Club
What: Week 1 GLEE Performances!
Where: Choir Room
When: Friday Sept 21st, after school
Warning: TBA

Will looked around the room finally feeling at home again with the familiar faces. He hoped that the kids were as excited as he was....or were at least a little excited.

"Hey gang! Let's kick this year off with our best. So let's be respectful and supportive of our classmates as they give it their all."

Will turned to the instruments in the corner, and waived his wand....

"Animate Accompinum! Who wants to go first?"

Lonnie sat in the back, arms around her stomach. She hadn't been able to stop feeling disgusting since that night with Meru. Even there, dressed in what ammounted to a black bra, silk shrug and jazz shorts she felt that she was doing something to insult Michael. The song had been chosen almost completely because of how guilty she'd been feeling. When Will asked who wanted to go first, Lonnie raised her hand. Better to get this out of the way.

She walked up, kicking her heels off as she did so. She looked around the room. "So, I figure the point of this assignment is that we should see that we all share things in common, male or female. I figure we should be looking for songs that we relate to. I'll give the first person to figure out my connection to this song 20 galleons. Anyway. This is D.D. as performed by The Weeknd."

Taking a breath Lonnie got ready to perform. She not only had the song to sing but she danced as well. She was glad for the dance because she could forget to be heart broken as she sang it.

She likes the boys in the band
She knows when they come to town
Every musician’s fan after the curtains comes down
She waits at backstage doors
For those who have prestige
Who promise fortune and fame
A life that’s so carefree

She’s says that’s ok
Hey baby do what you want
I’ll be your night lovin’ thing
I’ll be the freak you can taunt
And I don’t care what you say
I want to go too far
I’ll be your everything
If you make me a star

Dirty Diana, oh
Dirty Diana, no

So what if she was Dirty Diana? It wasn't as if the whole school didn't know she was a whore anyway. When the song was over and the dance was done she licked her lips and avoided Meru's eyes. "Thanks." She said before going to sit down again.

It was Santana's turn to cheer for Lonnie. As soon as she saw her in her outfit, she gave her a loud whistle. That was the Lonnie she knew; confident and sexy. She cheered and whooped when she performed, her normal, bitchy facade gone. When her friend finished, Santana applauded and gave her a thumbs up.

Will sat through this song with mixed feelings. Although the song was sung well and the choreography was handled brilliantly, there was still a problem. How to praise the performance while also being sure to let her know that the song choice might have been a bit to sexy for a "school sponsored" activity. Not to mention the whole thing sounded a little too genuine.

"Thank you so much for starting us off with that emotional performance. Great job on the choreography. I can tell this song means a lot to you and speaks to you. It was a risky choice. Not a problem for us here in Glee, you are among friends. For our group performances, however, we'll probably be going in a different direction. But way to tackle the assignment!"

Rory had had a tough time deciding which song he was going to sing. He didn't usually have a hard time deciding on a song for Glee, but... gender-swap, really? He wasn't exactly comfortable with singing a female song, but that didn't mean he wouldn't.

Deciding going second wouldn't be too bad of an idea, Rory got up and headed to the spot Lonnie had just left. Instead of announcing which song he was going to sing, and going through all that, Rory decided just to get it over with.

Mean by Taylor Swift was the song he had chosen, and he felt he did a somewhat decent job at it. Once he was finished, he nodded, and sat back down in his seat.

That familiar country two step started up and immediately put a smile on Will's face. He never thought one of the students would choose country music on their own. Although he was tapping his foot and singing along by the end, there was a much more important reason this was a really great song choice.

"Rory, thank you so much for that great song choice." Will turned to the class at large. "You see guys how this song, is not limited to gender and talks about bullying that can effect any one of us, and probably has. The song speaks up against those who put others and teaches us to look towards our the future for the strength to get through it. Well done Rory!"

Brittany gave a loud 'whoo' at the end of the song. Although she hadn't had a chance to hang out with Rory in quite awhile, she would always have a soft spot for the boy that had introduced him to Tori. She caught his eye and winked, as he passed by her.

Rory beamed at Brittany, he had always liked the blonde Hufflepuff. Though they hadn't spent too much time together, not in a while anyway.

Mercedes liked the idea of this week's Glee Club. It gave her a chance to sing something that she normally wouldn't have on her own. So, keeping that in mind, Mercedes chose Don't Trust Me by 3OH!3 as her song to sing. It was definitely a song she wouldn't have chosen on her own, and it was a song that was sung by a male group.

So, after Rory sat down after his song (a song Mercedes was rather fond of, honestly), Mercedes stood up and made her way to the spot in front of the group.

She had changed up the song a bit, but it was still pretty much the same. And, after she was through, she flashed a smile at the group and settled back into her seat once more.

Oh boy, thought Will, this is a tough one. Mercedes was better then this. The song seemed repetitive and, honestly a bit negative. But the singing was good and she had certainly chosen something she would not normally have.

"Well you certainly honored the spirit of the assignment. That certainly was going outside your standard fare, so good job with that. But I challenge you to find songs that may not be so repetitive and will challenge you to "show off" the range and dynamics of your voice. Never forget what a fantastic singer you are, and don't be afraid to challenge yourself. It could open the door to some solo work for you!"

Realizing he didn't want to appear as though he was favoring anyone unduly, he followed up quickly to the class in general.

"And that goes for anyone interested in solos at sectionals and nationals this year. Remember, each week is a chance to bring your best. Some songs that are very popular, even our favorites, can be quite repetitive. It's the old "Piano Man pitfall." Piano Man by Billy Joel is a great song, but not for competition and performance. It's five minutes of the same exact melody...and worse yet, here's a little secret. Did you know that the chorus AND the Verses use the exact same melody AND Chords? Just an octave higher? So be thinking of that in the coming weeks everybody."

Santana was glad for her turn. Wearing a small black dress and hat, the Slytherin went to the front of the room, ready to perform. With her wand, she summoned two cellos to play, thinking that was all she needed for her rendition of the Michael Jackson classic.

Turning to her audience, she said, "Okay, I'll be singing 'Smooth Criminal' by Michael Jackson. Enjoy, though I know you will."

As the cellos started to play, Santana took her microphone and started to sing. She went out to the audience during her song, maneuvering around the chairs, dancing, all with a smile on her face. It was hard to admit, but glee really was the best part of her day.

You've been hit by
You've been struck by
A smooth criminal

Finishing the song up front the instruments returned to their normal state of rest and she bowed, then went back to her seat. She'd like to see someone do better than her.

"Hells yes," Brittany cried out, once the song was over and Santana had taken her bow. The Slytherin girl had killed the performance, as usual. Santana seemed like she was made for the stage, like she carried a bit of the stage with her wherever she went. It also didn't hurt that she was sexy as hell, and Britt couldn't help but squirm in her seat.

Dani had never been to a Glee club meeting, she wasn't exactly sure what to expect. But as the others started to get up and sing, she decided she liked what she saw. And though she wasn't certain if it was allowed, she got the strong urge to get up and sing, and see if she would be allowed into the club. Though she really didn't know what she would sing. Today was apparently gender-swap day, so she'd have to sing something by a male artist or group.

Suddenly a song came to her, and she decided to get up and see how she did. ...after all, if she sucked, she could leave and never come back. Besides, Glee Club was supposed to be about acceptance and all that stuff, right?

"Hi... my name's Danica, and I'm not officially part of club or anything, but... here it goes." And with that, she started on I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing by Aerosmith,

Will was impressed. Most folks come to a couple of these before getting up the courage to get up and go it alone. A duet or trio maybe, but this girl had a quiet confidence about her. But she was an enigma really. The courage of Gryffindor, ambition of Slytheryn but sorted into Ravenclaw if his memory served him correctly. Interesting....very interesting.

"Let's hear if for the new girl! That's a tough song to come out of the gate with. Singing, I can help with....not that you need a lot in that area, but confidence is a nature gift not alot of folks have. We will watch your high school career with great interest."

Blaine had missed Glee. He really had. With everything going on around him and all of them right now it was nice to have the distraction, to lose himself in the music. He was wearing his usual sweater and bow tie, but his hair was a little less gelled than normal. He had other things on his mind. He got up in front of the group and gave a tense smile, "I'll be singing It's Not Right but It's Okay by Miss Whitney Houston."

Blaine channeled his anger and frustration into the song and the lyrics. As always he drew all eyes too him by talent but the anger wasn't like him. It was clear there were other things going on in his life, things that he only knew to take out in music.

"Oh! Oh! Wa-oh!"

Blaine ended the song on a bang and the music cut with his voice. He stood there a moment, breathing out before his voice was soft and back to it's usual sweet tone. "Thank you," He said and made his way back to his seat.

Blaine as usual had performed with polish and passion. A rare combination to be sure. As if the voice wasn't enough, the dancing looked as though it had been practised for months, when he probably was doing most of it off the cuff. By the end, the whole room was clapping in time and singing along.

"I'm sure we've all had frustrations in our life. We can always channel that energy in to the positive coping power of music! Let this just be a lesson that not just "soft" music can come from the heart. Like Dolly told me this summer, 'Even with all the right notes, and all the right moves, in the end, It's all about passion in performance'"

Liv didn't have too much trouble choosing a song for gender-swap week, or whatever it was called. She knew exactly which song she was to sing, she knew which version of the song she was going to sing. But she didn't want to go first. There was something about going first that made her feel super nervous, and she hated that feeling.

So, after a suitable amount of people got up and sang (including that new girl who really wasn't a part of Glee. Yet, anyway), Liv decided it was her turn.

Standing in front of the group, she offered them a small smile. "Hi! I'm going to be singing Hurt by Johnny Cash." And with that, she nodded, and began to sing.

Although Will had never been the biggest Johnny Cash fan, the main reason had been the general nagging notion 'I wonder what this song would sound like with a great singer singing it.' Yes, the man in black was a master song writer who cut to the pain and true grit of real life in his lyrics and music, but his vocals could have been better. And once in a while, when a student with enough insight caught on....Will was able to hear one of those masterpieces done well....

"Liv, this song is amazing and really brings out the low richness in any voice. But it also proves that as song doesn't have to be showy to be powerful. It would be a good song in a longer set as an intimate moment between "big show stopping" numbers. I recommend "Halellujah" by KT Lang for someone with this same voice range."

Dean was sure that following up Johnny Cash with his song was a bad idea. Nevertheless he had a song picked out and he'd be damned if he was going to just sit there and not sing it.

He stood up and walked to the front stage. "So." He rubbed the back of his head. "So um. Yeah let's just start huh? You'll know it once you hear it." He didn't go to his usual guitar and instead sat at the drums. He counted out the beat. Then the 30 Seconds to Mars cover of Bad Romance begane. Dean sometimes looked at Tina. Sometimes at Puck. sometimes he just closed his eyes and sang.

I want you in my bed
I'll make you sick.
I want your love. Love, love, love.
I want your loving and I want your revenge
you and me could write a bad romance...

When the song was done, he smiled and sat next to Tina, kissing her.

Tina always loved the way Dean sang. It was rough in the right places and sent shivers down her spine. All she could do was think about his voice and what had happened up in the common room and it left Tina squirming in her seat slightly, aroused.

When he sat back down, she returned the kiss and nipped lightly at his bottom lip. "Good song!"

"Ok settle down tiger. Save the smooching for AFTER class, lol. But seriously, I never really though the original version of this song captured the spirit of the pain of actually BEING caught in a bad romance. This one comes much closer. And nice job on the French, by the way!"

This year was shaping up to be very interesting. Will thought to himself. The song choices were bold, the performances clean and energetic. The real challenge would be getting everyone to agree on group numbers....and not fight over solos.

After her boyfriend's song, it was her turn to sing for the first time this year. Tina tried to take a deep calming breath and not be afraid. This was her year to be strong and brave and more self assured.

Tina stepped up and took the mic. "Um H-hi." She stopped herself as she started to stutter. Instead she closed her eyes, took another deep breath and started again. "Hi. I'm Tina, and I'm going to be singing one of my favorite songs, The Used's I caught fire."

Carefully she made her way to the piano and sad down as she began to play. Her voice had a slight tremor to it at first, but got stronger as the song went on. She managed to glance up for a moment at her boyfriend and smile.

"You could stay and watch me fall
And of course I'll ask for help
Just stay with me now"

She then managed a glance towards Puck and smiled as well.

"Take my hand
We could take our heads off
stay in bed just make love that's all
Just stay with me now"

Once she was done, Tina stood and bowed a little. "Thanks." She immediately made her way back to her seat beside Dean, feeling both excited and still a bit jittery.

"The thing I like about this 'piano only' arrangement is that it really highlights the fact that although this is usually an alternative rock song, it still has a great melody and great lyrics. So often we're so distracted by the crashing drums, high rock tenor vocals and great guitar riffs that we forget about the great song writing going on. I noticed that your breath support was stronger as the song went on. A good firm breath underneath those first few phrases will help to get the song off to a solid start. The power and control that you are capable of, came shining though after about a minute in. Nice job, thanks for this one!"

Ugh, Brittany never liked the first week of Glee. Sure, it was totally awesome to see her friends, and it was always the week that her tan looked the best out of the whole year, but her brain didn't really start working until around Halloween. It was like it was protesting the end of summer, or something. So, Britt had been left absolutely idealess, until the night before.

She got up to the front, facing all the other students. One thing she liked about Glee was that mostly everybody liked her, so even if it kinda sucked, they would usually lie and say it was awesome.

"I'm going to sing the classic hit, Sexyback, by Justin Timberlake. It was the song of the summer when I was like, ten."

Britt could remember that summer; the feeling of the sun on her skin, as she made up her own dances, on the porch of the family cottage. As she sang, she let one of those dances weave it's way through her body, making tiny changes where she had learned a new step, or was more or less limber than she had been six years ago. By the end, Britt felt like maybe she was back in her groove after all. She smiled, and made her way back to her seat.
