It was a long drive to the airport, especially with Mulan's thoughts full of her, which caused her to grip the steering wheel just a little tighter.
"One more for the road," Jane always whispered, wrapping her arms around her girlfriend and pulling her back into bed, kissing her until they were both drowning in each other's breaths, pressing skin to skin. Mulan thought she would never tire of Jane's kisses; it was a true struggle to pull herself from the bed each morning to catch her early class. The teacher thought she was a slacker, given that she was late at least once every couple of weeks, but she couldn't help it. Jane owned her mornings, her nights, her life outside of studying and work and family.
She didn't even celebrate Christmas really, but her parents had asked to to come home. The occasional long-distance phone call wasn't enough for them to feel involved in their daughter's life.
Mulan reached up and felt at the back of her head, tentatively. They were right, of course. She hadn't told them when she cut her hair (Grandmother would tell her she looked like a boy), or when she fell in love with a gorgeous American undergrad. She didn't tell them much beyond her grades and the occasional social event she managed to attend... and she did feel guilty about that. She loved her family very much. They deserved the truth about her.
She had a picture of Jane tucked into her wallet, and a new haircut, and several books Jane had suggested that had helped her father when she came out.
And she had three hickeys on her neck, three more for the long road back to China. Mulan hoped it was enough to make her family understand.
