Prompt/challenge you're answering: Jane and Violet: "Who do you think you are?"
Excerpt: "I'm Violet," she said to the blue-eyed girl sitting next to her, and the girl wrote her name at the top of the page, and then waited expectantly.
Violet didn't understand why teachers persisted in inane welcoming games, even through college. At least, finding a partner to share personal details with was less painful than reciting them to the class, but it was nerve-wracking, anyway.
"I'm Violet," she said to the blue-eyed girl sitting next to her, and the girl wrote her name at the top of the page, and then waited expectantly.
"Um... nineteen, single, eldest of three. My parents are still married. I graduated from Kissimmee High School, class of '08. Five-six, blue eyes, naturally dark hair..."
Violet trailed off as she realized that the girl wasn't writing any of it down.
"Um?" she said.
"Tell me about yourself," the girl said.
"I just did," Violet protested, clutching at the hem of her shirt self-consciously.
"You told me facts," the girl replied. "Who do you think you are?"
Violet glanced around at the other pairs. They seemed to be collecting the usual run of schools and families and dates.
"I'm Violet," Violet said.
"Well, I'm Jane," the other replied. "I love biology, ever since my father gave me a gorilla skull for my tenth birthday. I love to draw and my favorite author is Jane Austen. I've always secretly wanted to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer, even though I come from England, and I've never wanted to kiss a boy."
She smiled. "Who are you?" she asked again.
So Violet told her, and when they stood up to share with the class, their fingers met under the table, a gesture of solidarity, of humanity.
"I'll call you later," Jane promised when class ended, and Violet already couldn't wait.
