Excerpt: The girl pushed her hair out of her eyes, self-consciously, and handed the slim volume back to Jane, who smiled absently as she tried to remember her name.
"Hey! Hey, ah, you! You dropped your book!"
Jane didn't realize that the shout was directed at her until she was gently touched on the shoulder. She turned, lifting her eyes from the biology text she had been buried in, and met the eyes of a short, dark-haired girl.
The girl pushed her hair out of her eyes, self-consciously, and handed the slim volume back to Jane, who smiled absently as she tried to remember her name.
"Violet," the girl said, smiling back. "We're in Chem together. I figured you'd be upset if you lost your lab book."
Now Jane remembered her. She was the youngest person in their chemistry class-- very smart, but hesitant to speak up. Gently she poked Violet in the shoulder. Violet looked shocked.
"You should answer questions more often," Jane told her. "You've got a good mind."
"Oh," Violet replied, blushing. "Thanks. I just remember most of this from high school..."
Jane sighed. "That was a long time ago for most of us."
She shifted her weight, suddenly self-conscious. The decision she'd made to marry right out of high school-- she'd never regretted it, but she hated the way it looked to other people. She'd been the intellect in high school, graduating fourth in the class, and then married right afterwards. And here she was now, in community college, trying to finish the biology degree she'd always dreamed of.
To her bemusement, Violet laughed, reaching out and touching her elbow playfully. "You can't be more than 24?"
"Well, 23, actually..." Jane admitted, utterly distracted by Violet's gentle brush of fingers.
"Well, that's not old-- it's a good place to be. You probably have your own house, right? You don't have to live in a dorm or anything, or worry about your younger brother coming here in a couple of years..."
Violet's words made her feel old, anyway, but young at the same time. She was only 23, after all. Five years out of high school.
"That's true," she replied, and Violet looked down at her watch, suddenly, eyes wide.
"I'm late, I have to go!" she said, turning away.
"See you in chemistry," Jane replied, watching her dart away, and she smiled, her heart light.
