Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:incomplete, old pc: magneto, old pc: polaris, shadowcat

Who: Lorna, Open To Magneto, and others who may drop by later
What: Lorna, back in her room, hiding from her headache
When: 2/17/11, Afternoon
Where: Lorna's room
Rating: PG, though subject to change depending on who drops by later

The lights were off, and though the door was open a crack, Lorna had made the room as dark as she possibly could. Luckily, the curtains had been replaced and were heavy enough to keep the light out. She sat on top of the covers, wearing an over-sized t-shirt, and her jeans, barefoot. She was resting her head on an icepack that was quickly becoming a lukewarm pack.

She'd have to switch it out soon, or pop another pain killer. Had it been long enough, she wondered, the migraine was bad enough to blur the numbers on the clock by her bed, which was just flashing 12:00 anyway. She could tell.

It figured. She had gotten back into school only to have her health take her out again.

It was, he had decided, past time to check in with his new charge. She, unless he missed his guess, was trying to make her skull not-explode. She'd thrown around a great deal of power, more than her body was prepared to accept, and she was likely paying the price for that.

Luckily for her, he had a few ideas on how to give her some relief from the pain while her body healed and adapted to the strain.

He paused outside her door, sensing her presence, and wincing at just how much low-level E-M she was throwing around. He'd be amazed if anything electronic in her room was even marginally functioning. He then knocked, gently, but hard enough so that she'd not mistake it for anything other than what it was.

Lorna cracked an eye open, the sound of the knock on the door went through her skull like a lance. "Come in," she muttered before repeating it a bit louder, wondering if she could've opened the door via the metal door knob. She didn't, however. She was just as likely to send it flying through her bedroom wall. She already was suffering from throwing this around.

Maybe it was like the nuns at her old school had always said, and God was pushing her. Even if the concept sounded extremely stupid, though God could do a lot better than a simple headache, this was so far beyond that to give her pause.

Max let himself in, closing the door behind him. "Good afternoon." he said softly, out of deference for her current scraped-raw sensitivities. He took a seat in her desk chair, pulling to to her bedside so they could have a conversation.

"Bonjour," she said, flipping to French without meaning to, not even catching it in her greeting before moving on in an odd mix. When she was drugged, or her thoughts were a jumble it was never just the one language floating around in her brain, the two mixed together.

"I know you," she said in that mix.

"Bonjour" he said, his French rusty but a tiny trace of a Parisian accent leaking through. "And yes, you do. I'm glad that you remember me. I would like your permission to try something to make your headaches less." he offered.

"It's not more drugs, is it?" Lorna asked, despite having a mild need for the percoset, she didn't want bottles and bottles of pills just to deal with migraines. It shouldn't be this bad. But it was, and it wasn't going away.

"No." he said kindly. "No medications. But I will need to look deeply into your brain, my dear." he said. "The problem is that you have generated and used more power than your body is prepared to normally handle. What you are suffering from right now is oversensitivity to your body's perfectly normal signalling." he elaborated.

"What I propose to do is, to keep things simple, to turn down the signal strength until your body rebuilds its proper capacity."

Look into her brain? Lorna wondered exactly what that meant. If he was a mind reader like some of the ones they had here, but she didn't think that was the case. Or at least she didn't think that she thought that... pain kept her thoughts confused, like she was thinking from inside a blender.

"If it will stop this," Lorna said, trying to force it to make it all come out in English, which made her head throb even more. She didn't like having to stop and think about how she said each word. "If it will stop the headache, just do it."

"Very well." he said. "Lie flat, and for your sake, try not to move." he said, waiting for her to get so arranged before he put his hands on her temples, closed his own eyes, and extended his perceptions into the whirling storm of electrical impulses that comprised her mind.

The damage was easy to see if you knew what to look for. It took him nearly a half-hour to safely perform it, but he dampened the signalling, allowing much-abused neurons and signaling pathways time to desensitize and to calm themselves down. It was purely temporary, of course, but it would give the girl some relief.

What he was fervently hoping is that it wouldn't damage the balance levels of neurotransmitters in her brain permanently.

Lorna let him work. She could feel what was going on even if she didn't totally understand how he was doing it. It was like the most sensitive parts of her brain, the parts most prone to knee jerk reactions of pain had a warm blanket dropped over them.

The massive pain started to fade. The headache didn't go away completely, but what it was now seemed to be almost normal levels.

She opened her eyes, "Thank you..."

"You are welcome. I would recommend you avoid subtances for the new few days that are known to alter brain chemistry - no alcohol, no chocolate, things along those lines." he said, sinking back in his chair. Doing extended fine manipulation work always took it out of him and he wasn't exactly young anymore.

"When you have fully recovered we shall discuss precisely what happened and how best to avoid it in the future." he commented.

So pain killers were likely out of the question too, but she could deal with a mild headache without them. It had been the months worth of skull crushing migraines that had become unbearable and unleashed a chain of events that ended with her here.

"Right now, all that matters is it's gone," mostly, "I've only had a headache for months."

He made a noncommittal noise at that. "Once you have recovered from your overload, we will begin a full map of your neural mesh." he said. "To better be able to pinpoint where in your brain you stress when you use your powers and the best way to overcome such stresses."

"You can do that?" she asked. Lorna felt a bit fuzzy, but she didn't give that more than a second thought at the moment. It would've been so... nice to have had this when the headaches first started showing up, when she apparently stupidly thought they were manageable.

He smiled thinly. "You are not dealing with human medicine any more, my dear." he said. "I shall let you rest. It will hopefully only be a few days until your body rebuilds your resistances. Do try not to overextend yourself before then." he said, coming back to his feet.

"I won't," Lorna said, though wondering how she was going to get all her make up work done without over extending herself, at least in that capacity. There had to be a lot of it now, and it wasn't like she took bird courses.

Oh, this was going to be fun.

"Good afternoon, Miss Dane." he said by way of a farewell and silently let himself out of her room.

Kitty was in her room with the door open when she saw Erik pass to go into Lorna's room. There was definite uncertainty about his being there, but Ororo was the one in charge and not she. If the older woman believed he could help and thought it was worth the risk of him being there, Kitty could only support it. Unlike the way Rogue was reacting in Erik's recent post. She could understand where her friend was coming from, given the personal history between the two. But there was a time and place for her feelings. A public entry like that was not the best choice.

Keeping herself occupied, Kitty continued working on what was going to be homework for her class the next day. She only glanced up when Erik passed again. For a moment she simply sat there, then decided to get check on Lorna to make sure everything was all right.

She knew Lorna was struggling with headaches, terrible migraines, and knocked very quietly on the door when she approached. "Lorna," she offered softly. "It's Kitty. May I come in?"

Lorna was already sitting up and trying to sort out the homework on her bed. She felt... sluggish, but better. The headache now was something she could attribute to sleeping so much. Those she had gotten long before the migraines started showing up, and those would respond to over the counter pain killers.

She looked up at the knock on the door, "Come in," she called back. She wasn't overly surprised that Kitty was stopping by. Kitty seemed to check on her a lot, which wasn't a bad thing.

She opened the door and poked her head in before entering all the way. "Hey," she said with a smile. it was true about Kitty checking on Lorna a lot. She'd done the same with every other girl on the floor if they were sick or struggling with something. She wasn't sure when she'd become so much of a mother hen, but the role seemed to suit her well.

"I saw Erik leaving and just wanted to pop in and see how the meeting with him went." Lorna was sitting up and looking at what seemed to be homework. That in and of itself spoke well for the situation. "How are you feeling?"

"Kind of... heavy," Lorna said, "But better. And completely behind on everything," she said, muttering the last as she tried to figure out exactly where to get her start. She hated being behind on anything, let alone academic work.

"I'm not completely sure what he did, but it helped."

"Better is good." She couldn't help but smile somewhat fondly at the last sentence muttered. As a student, Kitty had been the exact same way so she could empathize completely. "When was the last time you had something to eat? I know when the headaches get really bad for most people, they can't really stomach much of anything." She bit her lip, then added, "You know no one is expecting you to have everything completed the day after you're starting to feel better, right?"

Lorna stopped to think about it. Surprised that she had to, but she supposed being a bit slow (but no less smart) was a side effect of not having the crippling pain. She could deal with it. The more she thought about it, she realized she hadn't had anything to eat, other than water or juice to take the painkillers with.

Which would explain the lightheadedness, "I don't think I've had anything today," she said finally and glanced back down at the work, "I... know, but I don't like not having it done." It was sitting there, taunting her after all.

"Tell you what, you get started on all of that, and I'll go get you something to eat." Dinner would be soon, but given that Lorna literally just started feeling better, it was safe to assume that it would be all right if she ate in her room tonight. "Anything in particular that you'd like?" She gave a small bow. "The kitchen is now taking orders, madame."

"Um... Salad, I guess? Or just something light," Lorna mused. She was hungry, but she wasn't sure what for, "I mean, I don't want to be too much trouble."

Kitty resisted the urge to give Lorna a small hug. Instead, she got up and opened the door. "Salad it is, then. I'll bring you some water, too." She winked. "You're no trouble at all, Lorna. It makes me feel good to be able to finally do something for you."
