This is a friendly reminder to please not give in to the urge to involve yourselves in cultural appropriation today. Have all of the Coronas and chips and salsa that you want but refrain from sombreros, ponchos, comically large mustaches, or other assorted stereotypes. Also, please keep in mind that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated by more Americans or Mexican Americans than it is by people in Mexico, and it is not Mexican Independence Day.

There is an English tradition of Oak Apple Day that is celebrated on May 1st. In Sussex, those not wearing oak were liable to be pinched, giving rise to the unofficial name of "Pinch-bum Day"; similarly it was known as "Bumping Day" in Essex.
Who is wearing oak today?

What an entirely exciting time to be back at New Haven. I'm professor Daniel Keeling and I'll be taking over the vacancy in the Journalism departments. I look forward to welcoming you soon to my courses. Students registered for the Fundamentals seminar should be advised the curriculum has been updated.
