Who: Tim and Mia
Where: Japan
When: January 8th
What: Tim and Mia have dinner and get ready to do a little crime busting in the land of the rising sun.
Rating: Probably some violence and Miamouth
It had seemed spontaneously asked. Like Mia didn't have a plan really when the question came out of her mouth. Tim had looked away, just holding still and entirely caught in his internal mechanizations, then after an eternal moment had nodded. "Yeah. Let's stay for a while."
Just like that they had seen the rest of the group off at the airport, then had moved on, traveling the next sea shore town over to see the sights. They found a hotel room, stayed in the whole day, and now both having slept soundly were out exploring the night life. Currently that meant enjoying dinner at a restaurant and discussing where they wanted to go next.
"No more monkeys," Tim said when she teased. "I don't mind any temples, but monkeys are mean." Oh, they had been charming and adorable to Mia. They had just tried to steal his stuff. He dipped his sushi into a sauce then tasted it, his eyes glancing toward the back of the restaurant thoughtfully. "You notice...?"
~~~~
She’d asked spontaneously, because she’d had the idea that they should stay a couple extra days suddenly over breakfast. She was glad that he agreed. Although she was fairly certain she would have stayed even if he didn’t.
But hey they were finding a couple of interesting things to do. “Those monkeys were amazing.” She argued. The sanctuary had been fun. And all the monkeys were used to humans, and most had been in the hot springs. It had been fun to watch.
But dinner wasn’t so much fun to watch. The food was amazing, and there was good ambience, and it was easy to see why locals and tourists seemed to love this place, but Mia had very quickly noticed there seemed to be a back room. That in itself wasn’t weird as many restaurants had private rooms. But the two men standing and chatting by it were definitely muscle. “When they arrived ten minutes ago….”
There were too many questions though. She hadn’t paid the party much mind until she’d noticed the muscle so she hadn’t gotten a good look at the three men inside the room. It could be anything from something criminal to a celebrity out to dinner. “Did you get a good look?”
~~~~~
“Not a celebrity,” Tim concluded easily. “Not with the vehicle they drove up in. Plus celebrities have a habit of making sure their body guards keep their shoes in good condition. These guys, not so much. Practical shoes, in good condition, but not new. I find it hard to believe they’re professional bodyguards, from that and they’re shuffling with impatience. So they’re something else.” He ate his sushi, chewing slowly to savor the flavor. “Mm. Problem is, they have long sleeves currently. Makes it harder to spot tattoos, and how extensive.”
He held up some fish with his chopsticks toward her. “White tuna. It’s very soft.”
~~~~~
Tattoos or not. That would be a very important thing to know. She watched discreetly as the two guards started chatting a bit to each other. They were too faraway to hear anything, and she doubted Tim could read lips in Japanese. She pulled out her phone and scooted closer to Tim, quickly acting like she was taking a selfie of them as she took a picture of the men. “Do you think you can get into the local police systems? If they’re sitting on this place I don’t want to mess their shit up.”
She gave him a slight smile, before leaning forward and taking a bite. “God, that's amazing. I hope this place is just where they want to have dinner and not a front for them.” The difference was this restaurant getting shut down or not.
~~~~~
“Really?” he asked with a quirked brow at the selfie cover. But he smiled and went along with it. He was often terrible at pictures, which showed in his smile never quite being genuine. "But that’s a good idea.” He pulled his phone out, humming as his thumb started rapidly flying over the keys, coding starting to scroll down the window. “One could hope. But I’ll keep on the side of pessimism in the meantime.”
“So while I’m trying to get into a very sensitive police relay system, were we keeping to the coast from here on out?”
~~~~
“Shame fantastic food.” She said as her own thumb worked fast at her own phone. Spree could remotely run facial recognition. It just might take a little while. “I’d say we should tip our server well, but you know, they don’t do that here.” She took a sip from her cup. “Facial recognition will take a while. Got anything?”
“I thought we might. Unless there’s something you want to see. I’m kind of liking this mindless wandering.” She’d be tempted to see how long he’d hang here for, but he actually did have classes to get back for.
~~~~
“Patience, grasshopper,” he chided lightly, still working on the phone diligently even as he scooped up another bite and chewed it slowly.
“Aimless wandering… Not my style, but… first for everything. And it’s worked for us so far.” He thought he was doing this winging thing really well, but it was easy when Mia had such easy confidence of just going and doing. “One of the workers is pretty busy in the back. The chef is being way too focused on his prep all of a sudden. He’s cleaned his station twice and going on a third. Oh hello…” He turned his phone sideways, swiped at the screen. “Watched, suspected… but not enough evidence. Should be good if you’re feeling a little restless?”
~~~~
Aimless wandering was just way easier with two people as well. There had to be at least a barebones plan with a large group of people. “It’s definitely relaxing. Wake up whenever. Bed whenever.” She shrugged. Overly scheduled vacations didn’t seem like a vacation to her.
Mia leaned in to read the phone as well even if she couldn’t read Japanese. Her phone pinged then. She picked it up and smiled to herself. “Well, imagine that.” She said pushing her phone towards him. There were files up for the guards based on facial recognition the younger of the two didn’t have much, just a couple arrests. The older one had the interesting rap sheet. “So I guess restless it is. Didn’t exactly bring my gear though.”
~~~~~
Tim nod in agreement to that, smiling. He still slept a lot less than Mia. She conked and was under for hours, whereas any change in sound would wake him up. But he was sleeping enough, and that had been beneficial all around. Otherwise he’d be a haggard mess.
Tim thought, hand going over his watch and seemingly just shifting it on his wrist. “They’re getting ready to move whatever they’re after, but we won’t be able to follow them until then, and I don’t want to even attempt in a civilian area. If we try to get up right away, we also risk being connected. We have about 13 minutes of comfortably eating and then another four that it will take to pay the bill minimum. They will likely be out the door in three.” He filled his cup up with more tea from the kettle. “So we’ll follow at a distance and figure out how to hide our faces then. If it’s too much of a risk, we’ll reconsider our options.” He filled Mia’s cup. “In the meantime, that gives us time to finish enjoying our meal.” Something fell out of his hand on the other side of her cup, a small, black disk he’d separated from the back of his watch. No one watching was at an angle to see it. He set the teapot down, then picked up more sushi. “So, fire away, huh?” He ate the sushi, then made a face. “Mm, wmarm!”
Eating spicy hot things was something Mia was definitely better at.
~~~~~~~
“So just so I have this right.” She started. “Good food, then break up some crime?” She grinned. “You definitely know how to plan a date.” She joked as she slid the tracker from his watch into her hand. She thought for a long moment. She could pull her drunk, pretty blond girl act and definitely slip the tracker into someone’s pocket, easy peasy. But she didn’t really have the gear for the ass kicking later and really didn’t want to chance the man remembering her. “I’m going for the guard’s messenger bag.” The man would definitely feel it if she flicked it to land on him. “But that means it’ll only track the bag. After this we could end up at his girlfriend’s house.” She warned.
For a few seconds Mia bounced the tracker and balanced it on her fingers taking quick mental note of it’s weight and shape. She then let it fly when no one was looking and the small tracker landed in the open side pocket.
~~~~~~
“Well, can’t let you get bored, right? I want to be able to return to this country at some point in the future.”
“Well, if that happens, we’ll apologize.”
Tim tilt his head to the side with a click of his tongue when he saw by her expression alone she hit her mark. “Talented, that. Did you even try?” He pulled the sashimi platter toward himself.
~~~~~~
“So helping out Japanese law enforcement without being asked won’t get us banned from the country, but me being bored would? How little faith you have in me.” Then again she spent a good hour more than expected with monkeys this afternoon so maybe he had a point.
She shrugged. “Honestly, not really. If I couldn’t do that, Ollie would be super pissed and probably attempt to put me back through boot camp.” She joked a lot about Oliver, but Jesus, was that not an experience she wanted to relive.
~~~~~~
“That’s not lack of faith talking. That’s experience talking,” he said as though completely serious, punctuating the words with a wave of his chopsticks before picking up a piece of snapper.
Tim looked up, musing. “Ah, that’s right. He likes to drop people off in the wilderness for a few months, doesn’t he? Without even a music pod. That’s just cruelty.” Though not like any of the training in the Cave was gentle. Still, of the two of them he knew who had the better aim. Tim played with his watch, bringing up the tracking screen. “Signal’s good. Try the salmon.”
~~~~~
She was tempted to flick a bit of rice at him for that. But that would have proven his point. Then without being able to help herself she did it anyway. Just one piece bouncing lightly off of his forehead.
Whoops.
She’d done an island trip. Which had been a far more advanced sort of thing. No training with Oliver had been brutal. She felt like sometimes people forgot he actually knew what the fuck he was doing through all the jokes and loud rantings. “That was brutal, but I’m also 95% convinced he was trying to wash me out.” It’d taken her so long to convince him to train her up that she had given serious thought that that’s what he’d been trying to do.
She took a bit of the salmon. “We’re going to have to find something to conceal our identities.”
~~~~~
“Ah, your maturity is so endearing,” he said, then entirely gave away that he was teasing by flicking the rice bit back toward her nose.
Tim took a sip of tea, amusement crinkling the corner of his eyes. “I’m 100% sure he was trying to wash you out. He’s protective of you. Thankfully, despite what others may think, Oliver isn’t dumb, just often ruled by his emotions, which leads to some rash decisions. He was good enough to realize you were going to go out anyhow, so at least he made it so you wouldn’t get yourself killed.” A pause. “Glad he came to that conclusion.”
“Yeah. Hoping your spontaneous luck comes through for us. I’m thinking we have about a 73% of it doing so.”
~~~~~~
“I’m too stubborn for my own good sometimes.” She said with a shrug. So many people who were stubborn refused to admit it. Mia had no problem admitting so. And it was also why the few times she and Oliver butted heads the cursing could be legendary. “But I just called him every creative curse in my repertoire and kept going.”
“73% is a random number, but those odds aren’t even in the ‘Hold my beer, I got this.’ territory yet.” Which was where Mia operated for the most part. She was sure this annoyed some people who knew her. After all she was shown to have the ability to stop and think (even if it was still out of the box) when dealing with other people.
~~~~~
“It’s close. There’s only like a 25-ish percent where things don’t just luck out for you. It’s been awhile since I’ve reviewed the scenarios to calculate your situational odds, though. Maybe it’s increased.” He put a finger to his chin, mulling it over.
“Well, time to pay up and get to work. We technically overextended our holiday, so it’s not like we’re losing vacation time, right? I’m not going to get any flack for this later?” More teasing as he motioned to gain the staff’s attention for their bill.
~~~~~
“Well when luck turns bad you do something else.” Sure sometimes her stuff didn’t work, but if you kept at it something usually stuck to the wall so to speak. But that also wasn’t how some people operated. “Well, I’ll try to stay lucky… Just for you.”
She almost argued that extended vacation time was still vacation time. Instead she pulled out her card to pay. He’d gotten lunch so only fair. “Not too much flack.” She teased. The waitress came by and it took exactly as long as Tim thought it would for the transaction to take place.
~~~~~
“I’d appreciate it.” A fond look her way, one of those brief ones he couldn’t help sometimes. “I like you around.”
“Oh, so chivalry is not dead,” he said in jesting when she offered her card before he could hand his over. Then backpedaled a bit. “Well, actually that saying has additional connotations presently than what actual knight codes were, which had a great deal more to do with fighting conduct and honorable bearing than showing courtesy to ladies. So true chivalry would be drawing your sword and demanding a straightforward, honorable fight.” A pause. “I’m not trying to argue out of you paying. Just don’t forget to not tip.” Then he did his best to shut up while money was exchanged before shuffling out of his seat.
“Well, shall we?”
