Psychiatric Help- 5 Cents
Who: Black Canary, Scarecrow
What: Canary sneaks into Arkham and finds more than she bargained for.
Where: Arkham Asylum, Arkham Island, Gotham City, NJ
When: Friday, April 27th, 11 pm
Rating: R for violence and spook-factor.
It was no wonder people were always trying to escape Arkham Asylum-- even if they were criminally insane. It was dank and old and, frankly, creepy. If they weren't insane when they got here, it wouldn't take long to shatter whatever was left of their sanity. It almost made Dinah wish that she hadn't left her communicator at home so Babs could back her up-- but Babs didn't know she was here; and even if she did there was no way for her partner to get a hold of the Black Canary at this point. No, Dinah was well and truly on her own out here-- but she was used to it. She'd spent most of her superheroing career without a partner-- and even when she and Ollie were partners, they didn't stick together all the time. Dinah was fine with being alone, in fact, sometimes she preferred it.
The vaulted ceilings made it fairly easy for a sneaking superhero to traverse the long, open atrium that lead to the Director's office. She'd come in by way of a loose window and kept to the rafters. She could hear inmates screaming somewhere in the distance and Dinah suddenly felt, in the pit of her stomach, how outsiders felt when they came to Gotham.
But a native Gothamite didn't scare so easily-- or maybe they were simply built to withstand it better. She scrambled across the rafters down to the end of the hallway, where she was met by several armed... persons lurking outside the Director's office door. They weren't Arkham Security, that was for sure. Not that she didn't think that Arkham Security would carry fully automatic weapons- but they weren't wearing the typical riot gear of Arkham Security, nor ID badges. These guys were definitely of the mook variety-- so now the question was, what were they doing outside of the Director's office? Who's side were they on; and where was Dr. Crane in all this?
Black Canary dropped down from the ceiling with one foot extended, planting it in the back of one baddie who crumbled to the ground, winded and unconscious. Canary dropped low and swept the feet of the second thug, keeping her body out of alignment with his gun. He fell backwards onto his butt but before he could stand, she delivered a quick switch kick to the head, laying Thug B out cold. Now the only matter was to get into the office...
She tried the knob but it was locked. Now, Dinah had never been very good at picking locks and she simply didn't have that kind of time, given that she had two K.O.'d goons at her feet. She looked left, then right, took one step back then simply slammed a powerful kick into the door, breaking the door jamb off which left the lock intact but the door broken.
After dragging Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dumber (not the real Tweedle Dum of course) into the office, Dinah closed the door and set her detective's eye around the place. Surely there was something here.
Why couldn't they just have a neon sign that said "Hey good work! You found me! I'm a bad guy after all. I'll go to jail now." Then again, if they did that, there probably wouldn't be any need for vigilantes and she'd have to go back to a day job like every other working stiff, so she'd have to remember to thank bad guys for making things so damn difficult.
Nothing immediately presented itself as suspicious, which was annoying if not entirely unexpected. Canary began shuffling through papers and drawer, looking to uncover any clue, any evidence. Her hand brushed a tube of papers. Pulling them from the drawer, Dinah laid them out on the desk, using a leftover coffee mug to hold one corner down.
The maps of Arkham Asylum that she uncovered weren't in and of themselves suspicious... but what was disconcerting was the extra area that seemed to have been added onto the basements. One of the maps showed the blueprints that were available to the public, but another, more detailed map showed something different-- a whole separate unaccounted for room down in the basement.
Well. Chalk one up for the good guys.
Leaving the maps and the snuggling, passed out bad guys, Dinah left the office and made her way towards the basement, following the clearly marked signs.
As she drew closer to the basement, she could see five more of the Gun Fu Brigade waiting at the entrance of the basement. Four looked nasty enough, but the fifth was bigger and, from their body language, Dinah could tell the others looked to him for orders. Five was a lot, particularly with their spray-and-pray types of weapons they were carrying. This was going to take some finesse. Staying out of sight back behind a corner, Dinah let out a sharp whistle. The big one nodded at two others, clearly commanding them to check out what it was.
Crouching beside the wall, Dinah waited until they'd run clear past her before she chased after them. She threw a flying kick into Baddie Part Duex Point One's back, driving him into the ground. Quickly, she turned back to Baddies Part Duex Point Two and drove her palm up into the septum of his nose, breaking it cleanly. The noise he made couldn't be helped and Dinah could only hope that they other three didn't come running to help their friends. She threw up one hand to jab Point Two in a pressure point under his jaw, near his ear as he clutched his nose and he promptly crumpled on top of Point One.
However, the next one came out and leveled his automatic weapon at her. Dinah did what anyone would in that situation-- she ran for cover just as he opened fire.
Dinah dove behind a granite pillar that separated her from Point Three as he was joined by Point Four. Chips of granite flew off the pillar, tearing a few shallow cuts across her arms and legs, but the injuries were minor. Once both baddies stopped firing (Dinah could only imagine that they were asking each other if they'd actually hit her), Dinah drew a deep breath. She popped back around the pillar and opened her mouth just as they were turning their guns on her again. The entire hall was filled with a pervasive, although not particularly loud SKREEEEE noise-- like a dog whistle, or nails dragging down a chalkboard. It didn't have to be loud to be powerful. Both thugs dropped their weapons to clap their hands over their ears.
Dinah closed her mouth and took this chance to run between them, slamming a Haymaker punch into the jaw of Point Three just before elbowing Point Four in the temple.
That was four down. Only one Boss fight left. She didn't have the element of surprise anymore though, and he knew it. He was waiting at the entrance of the basement with his automatic-- the only way in was through him and they both knew it. Dinah shook her head. Poor guy. He really should have just gotten out of her way, she was done playing around.
He was about to fire when Dinah pushed off of her toes and zig-zagged a path up to him, staying low and out of the direct line of his gun. Once she was in close, Dinah wrapped one leg around the back of his legs, her foot planted behind his to lock him into close quarters. He droppe the gun and managed to land a good hit in the side of her ribs, but Dinah was already hitting with speed and accuracy that could only come from a master of martial arts. She took the blow to her trunk with barely a flinch though she knew she'd have a bruise the size of Texas come tomorrow. The bad tried to step back only to trip over her foot, just as he was swinging a wild punch that Dinah hadn't expected and couldn't block. It clipped her chin with enough force to make her bite down on her own tongue, her mouth filling with blood. She swallowed the bloody mess because she didn't have time to spit and went back into the battle.
Dinah charged once more, this time she stopped short and planted her hands onto the ground, flying up into a back handspring. Gymnastics weren't really her thing, but sometimes they could be very handy-- like when you wanted to get your legs around your opponent's neck and choke him until he passed out. Which, incidentally, was exactly what Dinah did.
With the Boss Man out cold, Dinah picked herself up off of the ground and spat another mouthful of blood out onto the tile floor before she pushed past the door and into the basement.
