The day had been filled with groups exhibiting dancing in the square, alive with musical instruments, singing, the whirl of skirts and timed feet. Now with the last of these completed and the sun nearing the horizon, the entire square was shut down, carts blocking the roads heading into it as merchants and event coordinators prepared the square for the celebration to come. When the carts moved aside, people immediately spilled into the square to see how the Faire Dance's decor.
The mage guild were first to truly show off. Fae lights flickered into the air, lighting the square in a myriad of soft, bright colors that fire lamps couldn't compete with. Barrels with ladles tied to them were full of magically cooled drinking water that maintained a frigid temperature despite the warm mugginess. The main stage was given a sphere that amplified the holder's voice to announce the tourney winners, each receiving louse applause and cheer.
All the vendors had come together to offer their edible goods as well, tables piled with foods and treats for the common to feast upon. It was advertising as well as a way for them to rid of the excess that would perish on the way home. Of course, wineries and breweries had not skimped in making their offers either. Barrels were stacked high and the kegs manned to see that no one took too much at a time. It was why many in attendance had their traveling mugs tethered to their belts, to partake of the free tribute.
And of course there was the dancing. Rushes were laid out to soak up any mud and minimize the dust. The stage was taken by famous bards and minstrels, often large musical groups. The square was alive with moving bodies while the other commoners crowded back to stand and talk or moved in and out of the taverns.
The ground and lower tavern floors were deemed for the commoners, however. It was the rooftop and top floor ballroom of one of the sprawling taverns that served for the royalty. Its staircases were heavily guarded to protect those of noble lineage. Fresh carpet and smooth floor and only the best food and drink were catered to the lavishly dressed clientele. Any of the nobility or tourney winners could stand on the rooftop and look over the rail and see the revelry below, could hear the sound from the stage, or they could retreat below to elegant music, bright chandeliers and polished floor.
As in any party, there were always deviants, especially the nobility daring enough to not only venture below, but those who brought a guest above.
