On his way to sell his ill-gained goats (with any luck), Blake couldn't swear that he was watching where he was going, either. He had a brief nod for the apology, eyes focused on finding Mrs. Stark, but the question meant he had to look at her and actually answer - and undoubtedly lose sight of his goal.
"Yes, of course, I remember," he said. "They were very fortunate; it was touch-and-go for awhile-" to the general shrieks of some of his patients who disapproved of two Indian children taking up precious bedspace, but as the alternative was not to have a doctor look at their aches at all, most people fell in line - "but they both healed nicely. More than that, I can't say; one morning I went to check on them, and they were gone from their beds."
