It was not the proper answer, and maybe there should have been shock and horror that a gentle lady was subject to the rigors of life in the wilds, no better than war at times, but Hill just nodded. "A hard life, but staying at home would have been harder." There was even just a trace of approval in his low voice.
"A few years now," he said. "Before that it was Texas, and before that, well, my unit was invading Georgia." The thin smile was grim now, eyes dark and distant for just a moment. "I suppose in a few years, when the wilds here are a little less dangerous, it'll be on to the next frontier, wherever the Army sends me with a horse and a gun." At least he was ensured security, as long as he kept his nose clean and moving generally up the ranks.
