Re: Matt & Blake
"Hide to the tanner does, and then is used for...well, anything that needs leather," Blake said with a small shrug. It was one way to ensure that the very last dollar was squeezed out of an animal that was to be slaughtered anyways. "But I understand cow and pig are favored over goatskin, though I can't say I can tell the difference. But if it's their business to determine such things, and they make that claim..." He shrugged again.
"Someone very irresponsible who knew little about goat behavior," he had to say, almost with a straight face.
Because it was put like that, and while he may not want the damn things, he also couldn't just drag them to the butcher and hack them apart, or bodily force them onto someone who would just take them to the butcher, Blake stop pushing the goats on Murdock. Particularly when the lawyer offered something better; actual advice as to who would take them off his hands, and with an angle to do so.
He followed the metaphoric gaze to find Mrs. Stark, chatting with another woman - two chances to sell the goats at once - near two very rich men, even if one was Mr. Stark and thus should rightly be lumped together with Mrs. Stark as far as potential buyers went. "I did name the goats," he grumbled very softly. "I just can't say their names in public, so Blueberry and Buttercup it is. Until the Starks realize that they're billies, not nannies.
"And I don't think they'd believe that I can't afford to board them longer," he added with wry acknowledgement for the perspective of doctors as wealthy men, "but if I just say that I can't board them, and let them think that it's the good nature of the hostler I'm wearing out instead of my wallet." It was less than he should have gotten, but he'd be free of the goats, and it was a better plan than setting them free in someone's office.
He was careful not to disturb Murdock's cane as he stood. "So, I'm going to see if there's a lovely lady who wants a goat, and if she does, I think I'll owe you something for consultation," he said ruefully.
