Son of Titan
Who: Captain Marvel
Where: The Moon Titan, Orbiting Saturn
When: Six Months Ago
What: After many long years, Genis-Vell returns to his birth home.
Rating: PG
Among the shards of ice that framed the quiet solar system's furthest borders, a ship dropped into normal space, a sleek dagger of dark metal and bristling energy cutting its way through the black.
Sunlight refracted off the hull of the Kree vessel, creating a dazzling display of angular alien metal architecture. The engines throttled down as it passed under the broken shadow of Saturn's rings, and then across the short gulf of space that led to the moon called Titan. The swirls of ice on the planet's northern pole cap pointed the ship's pilot to the hidden entrance of the city that lay deep beneath the surface.
The Kree ship, not unlike the kestrel, a winged creature on the homeworld called Hala, cut its engines in full and drifted to an orbit above the moon. Their powerful noise dropped to a low hum, and a doorway leading into space irised open. Standing at the threshold was a man in full armor, his skin swirling like space itself. Light came from within, as if the body was a window to a distant place, where each grouping of stars created constellations never seen by any from this system. Sol, it was called. First by the Eternals who'd founded a colony on its third planet, then by the beings they shepherded into civilization.
The being flew away from the ship, surging more powerfully than even that of the vessel he'd been using. An arc of light trailed behind him as he descended swiftly into a crater, deep into the moon. The light of his being cast long shadows on the cold rock, which gave way to smooth metal and before long, the shapes of machines and towers.
The place felt dead. A ghost city, absent of the life that had once been here.
The flying man pushed on, until he came to a great control room. The doors still functioned, opening and granting him access. A large screen lit up with the face of the immortal avatar known as ISAAC.
"State your name and business."
The figure stood, and his body, swirling with an echo of the cosmos, faded to the pink skin of humans. The glow in his eyes faded until they were only the blue of deep seas, and he removed his helmet, holding it under his left arm. "I am Captain Genis-Vell, of the Kree Imperial Space Navy, and your new master. I come here seeking the Eternals of Titan... and my mother."
ISAAC looked down at him as if for the first time. "It has been many years, Son of Titan. Do you not remember me?"
The man shook his head. "Should I?"
"You were very young, at the time. A child of no more than seven, when your mother sent you away. Much has happened since you left, and yet so little."
"Where are my mother's people?" the Captain demanded fiercely.
"They are gone. Forever gone. I am all that is left."
The Kree marched over to the access controls and set his helmet down as he started issuing commands on the console. "I grow tired of your minimalist answers. Explain in full."
Images flashed, of the people that lived here, of celebrations and violence, and finally the destruction of the city, its smoking ruins freshly leveled. "They are all gone, either dead or fleeing from this place. It is a graveyard now, a monument to... the Mad Titan. He whose name is forever stricken from my records, he who was cast out as a vile and hateful abomination by the other Titans, never to return..."
"I demand you give me his name!"
ISAAC sighed... a very organic response for even the most advanced artificial intelligences. "Even if I could, I would not, Genis-Vell, for he has taken that away from me."
"Is my mother still alive? My sister?"
"I... do not know."
Genis-Vell sighed, looking down at the console for a moment. Then his training kicked in. "Very well. I have need of you. All intelligence you possess on the third planet and its inhabitants. And your continued services in data collection. I am re-instating this installation in service of the Kree Empire."
"All of my databanks are yours, Son of Titan. But then you must destroy me. There is a chance he could return. He used me once before for great evil, and I do not wish to be his instrument again."
"If he returns, I will end his pathetic life and he will no longer be a threat."
ISAAC studied the Kree for a long moment. "Indeed you are powerful, as your fellow Titans believed you to be.... but the Mad Titan pursues his dire hunger for power and knowledge across the 28 known galaxies. He has made pacts with beings of great power that even one such as yourself could not hope to defeat." The face on the computer seemed resigned, wistful... sad. "You must destroy me. It is the only way."
"Very well." He lifted his helmet from the console and placed it back on his head. The gauntlets on his arms lit up, surging with power. The alien proceeded to download as much of the databanks as his ship and Nega-Bands could store, and then powered down. "Your service will be remembered, ISAAC."
It smiled at him. "You are much like your father, young halfbeing. Much like Captain Marvel. Bear his name with honor."
He nodded, and then a terrible energy surged forward, out in all directions from his body, weakening him as he sacrificed the cosmic power to annihilate the installation and the artificial intelligence housed inside. Then he raised from the ground, turned, and flew as swift as lightning back to his ship.
ISAAC's power dwindled to its last, dying mechanical breaths. "Live well, my grandson...."
And for the first time in many ages, Titan became truly lifeless.
