The batter was all set, the pan was warm and she'd buttered it down as the instructions had said. The last time she attempted to cook real food hadn't gone too well, but this time, she was sure it couldn't go wrong. She took a scoop and poured some of the batter into the waffle iron. People did this all the time. How hard could it be?
A moment later, she closed the waffle iron and went about with the waiting. That was before Shep decided to lift his leg slowly on the other side of the room. "No," she said as if he would listen. He looked right at her where he stood and continued to slowly lift his leg. "Shep. No," she repeated more sternly. The leg continuing to go up, she began to run toward him. A moment later, he dashed across the house.
Crisis averted, she headed back toward the kitchen before she saw him again. He was doing. The same thing again. "Shep, I will take you outside." She ran toward the dog again, but he only did a circle around the living room before settling along the far wall where he made to look like he was going to go again. "What has gotten into you?"
This time she approached slowly not trying to startle him. She crouched low to the ground, and he stood there perfectly still, leg raised threateningly in the air. "Good boy. Put your leg down." She got real close and she was about to get a hold of him when she heard it.
The fire alarm was going crazy and she frowned, remembering the waffle in the iron that she'd neglected because of the dog. She picked him up, tucking him under her arm and went back to the kitchen toward the horrible smell of burnt batter. She opened the window to let the smoke out and unplugged the iron. Dog in one hand, she moved the iron to the window sill to let the smoke carry out and dumped the charred waffle onto the snow covered floor.
She quickly dropped the dog into the bathroom and shut the door before heading over to deal with the smoke alarm.
