We meet again!
Who: Teddy and Billy
What: Teddy is not crazy! See? Tommy not!twin exists! And he is adorable!
Where: New York City
When: All week at school and finally Saturday.
Rating: PG
Teddy knew he was not crazy. No matter how much the rest of the team blew him off that there was a Tommy look-a-like at school. Tommy didn't care, Kate went to Hawthorne Academy, Eli really didn't know what to make of that, and Mia, who had the best idea of how well Teddy could imitate faces, had simply not seen Billy yet (and Teddy knew his name was Billy. His family had said his name at the store).
The bothersome thing was that he kept seeing glimpses of him, and never being able to really run into him at school. All week it was disaster after disaster.
He saw Billy pass in a hall and ran right into a teacher. The teacher had been horribly cross with him, and threatened detention as Teddy helped gather up his files and scrambled away with kids laughing.
Another time he was playing basketball after lunch as he sometimes did in the food court, and he saw the other boy walking across the yard. Teddy hit the basketball's net pole with a loud Clang! and all the boys stopped in their tracks with a chorus of "Ooooh!" Teddy laid on the ground, dazed as several faces came over him.
"Bro, you okay?" "Dude, did you get your nose?" "Let him, Breathe, Wilson! Unless you want to give him a kiss to wake up." "Aw! Asshole!" The other senior shoved the laughing boy away.
"No kisses, please!" Teddy said, finger pointing up. "But I'm sitting the rest out."
"Kay, Altman. Make sure you don't have a concussion." "Geez... the pole's still wobbling."
Another time he ran full on into the lockers. This was bad because he dented the open door of one, and bent it back in his hurry to help the unfortunate student close it. By time he looked hurriedly up, Billy was gone again. He slapped his forehead, frustrated.
Then he had his first choking experience in the cafeteria. The other boys at school had learned a fun game to play with him that had the benefit of giving Teddy extra food. They would bring him things to see how quickly he could make them disappear. A large pizza slice they timed under 2 seconds. So now they were sitting around the table, a foot long hot dog with chili on it before him and one kid holding a stop watch while five others watched.
"Three seconds," one nerd was saying to another with thick, black glasses.
"No way," the other disagreed. "Two at most."
"Doesn't count unless you finish off the chili too, Altman."
Teddy smirked. "You got it! Just tell me when."
The boy with the stop watch started the countdown. "All right... Three... two... one... GO!"
CHOMPCHOMPCHOMP-one more bite to go and he glanced up, and Billy was right there. He stopped, in a bit of shock, the food stuck weirdly in his throat. He blinked, uncertain what to do.
"Oh, crap, is he choking?!" A boy thumped Teddy on the back hard, and he tilt forward, leaving a single bit of the hotdog as he gave a hard swallow. Why had his throat tightened up like that?!
"I'm okay!" he assured after a second of forcing the food down. He looked around the cafeteria for the dark hair and eyes, and saw a bit of Billys' back pack leaving the door. He sighed and took the offered water. "Well, damn. There goes my record, huh?"
Friday was the worst though. He saw a glimpse of Billy as he was hurrying to his last class, and instead of going into Ethics, he hurried away to see where Billy was going and try to catch him. He ran right into the same teacher he had earlier that week, the poor man falling on the floor again with files scattering everywhere. And this time Teddy was also caught not having a hall pass.
He complained later to Mia that he had never had a detention in his life. It was miserable. He resolved during that boring waste of time that he didn't need to try to hunt the Tommy not!twin down at all. It was just causing him a lot of trouble. Besides, he couldn't explain why it was so important to him to find Billy. It just... was. And that bothered him and he wanted that to go away.
Then Fate intervened again.
That Saturday he went to the bookstore, buying himself a coffee and settling down with a pile of nutrition and martial arts books. His gingerbread latte was delicious, and he was engrossed with reading some of The Tao of Jeet Kune Do when he caught sight of the familiar corner of a red jacket (because at school that was always about all he managed to see to catch his attention). The other was at a shelf, looking at an open book with interest.
"Billy!" he immediately shouted.
Several people in the bookstore looked up in surprise. Teddy felt his pierced ears burn. He gave a stupid wave. "Uh, hi..." he said meekly.
Fate had a horrible, horrible sense of humor.
