Bruce had seen Zatanna perform many times since they were teenagers. He could have waited in her dressing room, but having arrived early, he spent the last fifteen minutes of her performance lurking in the back of the theatre, watching her onstage. As always, she was magnificent. Some parts of her act were familiar, or at least, he could work out how they were managed. Others, he could tell were accomplished with what she would call 'real' magic. Astonishing, yes. Frustrating? Definitely.
Once, in his younger days, Bruce had attempted to study 'real' magic with a Dr. Stephen Strange, titled the Sorcerer Supreme. Eventually, both of them had given up the task, the Doctor telling Bruce that while he had the aptitude to learn, he did not have the necessary attitude. Bruce view, and continued to view, magic as another branch of the sciences - as conquerable as the rest. That every practitioner of magic disagreed with him made Bruce irritable, as though they were deliberately keeping their secrets from him, even while trying to teach him, but teaching him wrong.
Bruce didn't like magic, as a rule. He did, however, like Zatanna. During the curtain call, he made his way silent and unseen to her dressing room and waited, crouched amid the flower bouquets and fruit baskets, waiting for her arrival.
