Mikaal was slowly but surely climbing out of the pit of apathy that had led him to fall of the wagon rather spectacularly. He had found a place to squat in, back in Bludhaven, although he preferred to call it house sitting. He had stopped a robbery in progress there, and the frustrated would-be robbers informed him that the place had been empty for weeks, and the owners were not expected back until Winter rolled around. The way he saw it, after warning them off the property and delivering them to the local authorities, he was performing a civic duty by inhabiting the space and keeping the crooks away. But now that he might have a job in Gotham, leaving Bludhaven behind seemed to be like the right choice. He had never meant to stay there anyway. Mikaal had simply not wanted to face Opal City again. Not yet. It was too painful, and it wouldn't be the same without Tony there, anyway.
He was sure he would still be making use of that empty loft from time to time. Bludhaven hadn't seen the last of him. But this job he kind of, sort of, maybe had would not pay him a penny until money started coming in from ticket sales, if he had understood correctly. That meant he needed a place to stay for a few days that was closer to the theater while he learned his way around all the props and the gear backstage.
He had been avoiding visiting Dinah out of guilt for what he had done, but she was an old acquaintance, and a decent person. He owed him a visit, and perhaps she could help him figure out some kind of living arrangement here in Gotham where he could be closer to the theater. Perhaps she could even help him find another job. One that paid now. That would be nice. The loan he had gotten from his friend in Metropolis would keep him fed and clothed for a while longer, but not if he had to pay rent and utilities on top of that. Sadly, people didn't give blue-skinned alien former heroes any discounts when it came to rent. If anything, their security and insurance premiums for metahumans were higher than for regular people.
He rang Dinah's buzzer outside the building downstairs and hoped she would be there to let him up. "Hello? Dinah. I don't know if you remember me. I'm Mikaal Tomas, a friend of Jack Knight."
