"You could always come stay with me. You know, until the situation is resolved. Or 'til you're back on your feet. I don't mind Mikaal. I've got the room," Dr. Santino said cautiously. Mik had met Daniel Santino through mutual friends in the course of the investigation of the criminal organization who turned Mik's life partner into collateral damage a few years back. Daniel had put his couch at Mik's disposal while he waited on an informant here in Metropolis. Mikaal crashed at Santino's house a couple of times. Ever slow on the uptake, he had also found out that Santino had been offering more than just a place to stay. He did take comfort in his grief once, but once he left he never looked back. After Tony, he simply didn't have it in him to give what Daniel needed.
They had kept in touch, almost purely on a professional level. It had made this meeting no less awkward. Daniel was letting him borrow some money. Mik had explained the status of his and Tony's old accounts, and it was just too big a mess. If Mik was involved in one of the officially recognized metahuman teams he might have a chance, but for right now he just needed a bit of cash until he could find work and get himself together. He was tired of this cycle of him losing everything every few years, but here he was. Apparently those twelve years with Tony had been all the respite life was going to ever give him, and they weren't without their upheavals.
"I... thank you. But I can't do that. It's not fair to you, and I'd feel... weird about it. I'm sorry."
"No, no. Don't be. I didn't mean to pressure you at all. I just... look, I know you don't... you never had feelings for me. I'm a big boy. I can take it. But you're still one of the good guys, Mik. I swear I'm just offering as a friend."
Mik smiled uncomfortably and stared at the tabletop. The nondescript café they had chosen for this meeting was near the heart of Metropolis. It was deceptively quiet, but the city bustled outside the large windows. The silence stretched for another long moment. Daniel broke it.
"You got the card and everything? And the PIN number?"
"Yeah," Mik replied. He nodded and darted a glance at his friend. "Thank you again. I won't forget this. I'll pay you back every penny." His cheeks darkened to a navy blue, the Talokian sign of a blush. He was saved from further awkwardness by a loud booming sound. The shockwave rattled the storefront's large window panes. Mikaal was on his feet immediately.
"I have to..."
Santino was already nodding and waving him off. "Go, go! Take care, Mik!"
Mik didn't even say goodbye. He sprinted out of the shop and took to the sky in the direction of the explosion.
