Questions would paralyze him, so Doug moved forward, tracking their movement from above. He soon caught up... they'd broken into a boarded up building, probably thinking they could hole up and make arrangements with someone. Doug would have to act now. Moving to the far side, he watched one man take a position just outside the door as the others went in. The place smelled of old plastic and dust, open, but with lots of shadows and no electricity. Had one of them palmed a cell phone or radio from the police? What was the point of going in there?
He looked over the edge of the roof, and to the next one. The jump across was further than Doug was comfortable doing, but he'd made it plenty of times before at ground level... so he backed up, steadied his breathing and leapt, skidding on the rooftop on stones as he scrambled to keep his footing.
Adrenaline was pumping in his system now. He tested the door to the roof access... locked, but there was a tarp over a window that had been removed, and he unfastened it easily, dropping down to the catwalk below with a thankfully muted clink of metal...
