Neville slid into the empty folding chair and took up her hand. His thumb brushed soft circles along the back of her hand as he waited for her to open her eyes. Minutes ticked by in a slow cadence as her lashes fluttered against her cheek. Neville had patience. He had time. This was important.

Her gaze was soft but curious as she looked up at him. He leaned forward to kiss her cheek. "Hi, Mum." Alice smiled through her confusion. She always did. Neville pulled back and withdrew a chocolate coin and pressed it into her hand. "Happy Valentine's Day."
