WHO Marcie and Cathal
WHEN Saturday 7th August, evening
WHERE Burlington, somewhere in the woods a little out of town
WHAT connecting and opening up over a few drinks and a bonfire
WARNINGS tbd

Marcie looked up at the sky, and the pinpoints of stars moving in and out as the trees above her swayed lightly in a warm summer night breeze. The beer in her hand was chilled from the ice it had been sitting in five minutes ago. Around her, the people they were here with were talking and laughing, and even though she knew only a handful of faces amongst them she didn’t feel alone. The two beers she’d already consumed might have had something to do with it, and the chill vibes coming from the bluetooth speaker someone had set up, and the crackle of the bonfire not too far from the sofa she was sitting on.

This was the sort of party she’d heard people doing during the summer when she was at high school and then while she was at community college, cook-outs with s’mores and sausages and drinks and dancing on top of cars or whatever. The stuff in music videos, not anything she’d ever seen with her own eyes. But then Jesse had said some of their friends from out of town were doing this thing, total safe space for the local rainbow community and their allies, and Marcie had been utterly delighted to be invited along with Cathal. Big kids only, sorry Kaden, but Adrian had been bribed into inviting Kaden out with his friends so that Kaden didn’t feel like he was missing out.

Spending an evening without worrying about how Kaden was feeling was just so… it made her feel relieved, and guilty for feeling relieved, but there was a Panic! At The Disco song playing that was totally vibing with her and she hummed and tapped her foot and felt fully relaxed for the first time in months. She was wearing a black maxi dress with pink flowers and her hair out, her sandals discarded next to her in favour of bare feet.

Cathal was around somewhere. Jesse had asked for his help with something and he said he’d come back. Cathal was so nice, Marcie thought. And cute. And his ass looked fire in the jeans he was wearing. Christ, she needed to stop thinking these thoughts, but she was a woman with needs, and she hadn’t done anything since that one night with Hermes and that had been… well, too soon, if she was honest. It wasn’t too soon now. She felt so wired sometimes, and had no outlet aside from going to the gym, and she was too wary of the men in this town to have a one night stand with anyone. Also she’d promised herself she was worth more than the way she used to behave.

Marcie glanced up to see Cathal picking his way back over, and she rewarded his return with a hazy, lazy smile, and moved her legs over a bit from where she had been holding his place. “Kept your seat warm,” she said, patting the cushion for him to sit down.

"Ah, and thank god for that," Cathal said, sitting back down. "On a chilly night like tonight!" He brought his drink to his lips, already onto his third. Tonight he'd arranged someone else to do the driving home. "Enjoying yourself?" he asked, looking over to the car across from them where Melissa Bennie was holding court about something.

"Better now," Marcie replied, following his gaze over to the woman talking to a small group of others. Sometimes she wished she had the knack of talking to people. Charisma, that's what it was. She was more a one-on-one charisma type. "You know her?" she asked, taking a swallow of her drink.

"Melissa. She works at the bank," Cathal said, turning his attention fully towards Marcie, his body turning a little with it. "We dated for five months about six years ago, and now I always get free pens at the bank." He tapped the side of his nose. "Pays to know the right people if you want those sorts of perks."

"Oh. And here's me, paying for my pens like an amateur." Marcie's assessment of the woman changed slightly, becoming more critical. Cathal had that friendliness that Marcie lacked, actually. He seemed to be liked by just about everybody, even ex-girlfriends. "Does that mean she gets free oil changes for life too?"

"She gets free oil checks," Cathal corrected, because car work was worth a little more than the free pens from the bank. "But we don't actually have much to do with each other these days, to be honest. It's just difficult not to run in the same circles in a town this small. You must know, you went to high school here."

Marcie laughed. "Yeah. I did. Did Jesse tell you I told Bethany Laughton to fuck off? First time I go out by myself and I bump into her." She snorted and shook her head and drank more. "Beth Lash was my best friend, until she turned out to be a two-faced bitch. Now she's married to my high school boyfriend. They deserve each other." She rolled her eyes in disgust, and then reached out to pat Cathal's arm. "Hey. At least Melissa is still nice enough to give you pens."

He knew Bethany and her husband, but not any of the fucking offs or of the history Marcie had with her. "Well," he said, leaning in to share a secret, "What I can tell you about Bethany is that a few years back she refused to pay for a new catalytic converter (said I was ripping her off) and said her brother could fix it for free. I heard the car broke down on the side of the road to Racine in the middle of winter and she had to wait for someone to go rescue her."

Marcie laughed, partly in malicious delight and partly tickled that Cathal would find this damning information. "What a Karen! Clearly, she knows nothing." Why waste time on that hag anyway? She raised her beer in salute to Cathal. "If she was truly a woman of discerning taste, she'd know your skills and business acumen are beyond reproach."

Resettling into the corner of the sofa, Marcie swung her legs around, one of them crossing Cathal's thigh. Merely in a bid to be more comfortable, not to encourage him to put his hand on her thigh. "So, how does being a mechanic here compare to being a mechanic in Ireland?"

Marcie's leg suddenly on him like that was a surprise and he tried not to look too long them, and he tried not to think it meant something more than just her ease. But Cathal kinda liked that. They hadn't known each other that long, but it made Cathal feel like a good person to have earned that sense of comfort from her. Was there any greater compliment in the world than someone being at ease in your presence? Cathal had felt, so long, like he wasn't at ease in his own presence.

"It's quiet," Cathal said, resting his arm on the back of the couch because he didn't want to rest it on Marcie's leg and finishing the last of his beer. "I'd been living in Belfast for three years before I came here, the longest I'd ever really lived in one place until then. And, oh, I loved it. Belfast is such a gorgeous, vibrant place, always somethin' happenin'."

She smiled at Cathal's reminiscing. "That's how I feel about New York. Why did you leave?" She reached out to take his empty bottle and set it down against the edge of the sofa, and gestured if he wanted her to reach him another from the cooler.

Cathal nodded to her gesture, because he'd probably want another beer. He accepted it with a nod and then said, "Well..." How honest to be with someone he didn't really know? Not entirely honest, obviously. Didn't want to give the impression that he was crazy or make everything too complicated and confusing.

"I've never gotten on so well with my parents," he said, taking a sip of his beer. "They're both really old fashioned and, well, fucked up in a lot of ways, and as soon as I was old enough I moved away to Belfast to escape all that toxic mess. But then I took a visit home and we had a massive spat and I decided I didn't want to even live in the same country as them anymore. So I got out, and here I am." It was the easiest way to describe how the relationship had imploded, even if some things had been left out.

"But your parents," Cathal said, gesturing with his beer and smile. "I love your parents, they're fantastic."

Marcie listened to his story, and figured he was paraphrasing what had gone down, but understood. If she wasn't feeling so relaxed by the beer and the music and the forest, maybe she would have said, "Yeah they are, I'm sorry things went badly for you," and moved on.

Instead, she said, "Parents are disappointing sometimes. I didn't talk to mine for months last year, so I get what you mean." She looked down at her beer bottle, running her thumb around the edge of the lip. "Mom told me two truths and a big lie when I was sixteen, and I found out the lie. I was so fucking angry." She tsked and looked up at Cathal with a shrug. "So yeah. At least I was in a different state so I could ignore their calls. Didn't have to move anywhere."

Oof. Cathal certainly understood about feeling lied to, about feeling like the people who were supposed to have you best interests at heart had been keeping something massive a secret.

He wondered what Marcie's 'two truths and one big lie' had been about, but those were the sorts of things you couldn't just ask someone straight out. But he could ask around those facts, to the important parts that affected her. "But you've managed to patch it all up with them? You seem on good terms with them from what I've seen? It's hard to forgive the people who raised you when they keep big things to themselves."

"Yeah... I was..." Marcie sighed and scratched the back of her head. "I was ill last year. Like, really badly ill. Funny how seeing the end helps you forgive people." She didn't want Cathal's pity though. She took a drink and sat up a little, pulling her leg back to curl both underneath her. "I'm fine now, but it was touch and go for a bit. Anyway, Mom and everyone came to New York. Couldn't help forgiving her. Didn't want to go with that weighing me down. I haven't forgotten, though. Whatever your parents did to you, I'm sure you'll never forget either." She glanced up at him, wondering what their spat was about. Must have been pretty terrible to send him all this way away from them.

Cathal frowned as she talked about her illness, and he could only imagine how that sort of thing would effect a person. It sounded like she'd looked death right in the eye, and Cathal had never been there. "Yeah," he said to her with a nod, "I can see how that would change your perspective. And your dad?" he added, noting how much of this was about her relationship with her mother. "Are you good with him?"

Marcie half nodded, half shrugged. "Yeah. My dad has always been there for me. He's not blameless, but it was my mother's lie." She looked around the gathering, taking in what others were doing. Nobody was really paying them any attention. A log on the bonfire snapped loudly and shot sparks upwards. Marcie necked the last of her beer and dropped the bottle into her lap. "I- Well, the thing is..." She looked up at Cathal, examining his eyes, trying to pull his trustworthiness to the surface. He reminded her a little of Much in some ways, which strengthened her desire to open up.

"Marco has always been my dad, in every way that counts, except... for the DNA part. Mom made a stupid mistake and he accepted me as his and let everyone think they couldn't wait until the wedding." She picked at the edge of the label on the bottle. "My bio-dad is a complete and utter fucking shithead asshole. He is the worst of the worst and I never want him in my life. Never." Her lip curled in disgust just thinking about Ares. "So Marco is my dad, and we get on okay. We both like cars, so, there's that."

Cathal could certainly see how learned that would have turned Marcie's life upside down. His own parents had always been upfront about who they were to Cathal, at least about the parts they considered 'important'. Learning that your father wasn't your father must have been a shock. "I'm sorry your bio-dad is a arsehole," Cathal said. "I suppose you can be thankful that your ma chose to give you such a wonderful father to replace him. I'm such a believer that family isn't made from blood, but from love and choices."

She nodded slowly. "Yeah. I- Marco is so supportive. And Kaden... he needs so much right now, and I don't know what I'm doing..." Marcie sighed and shook her head. She didn't want that heaviness to weigh down on her here. "Um. Does your dad like cars too? Is that where you learned your craft from?"

"No, my dad's not into cars." How to say my dad is only into being incredibly virtuous and 'a good man' without it sounded like Cathal was an arsehole for getting away from that? Maybe there wasn't a way to say that. Cathal certainly knew that, from the outside, everyone had nothing but love and praise for both of his parents. But those people didn't have to be their son, with everything that entailed.

"I did learn because of him though," Cathal settled on. "He always refused to buy a new one, but would drive this thing all over Ireland and so I learned how to fix it and keep it running. We moved a lot when I was a kid, I think it was seven different cities over the years? It meant I wasn't good at making friends, so I learned to do indoor things. Like fixing the car."

"You aren't good at making friends? But you're so-" Marcie stopped, trying to find the right word. Kind? Generous? Friendly? Hot? "I mean, like, I guess we learn a lot growing up, and things change. Moving around so much must have been hard on you. I know what it's like to not have any friends." She reached out to touch his arm, wanting to give physical reassurance in some way, but knowing it wasn't the way the alcohol in her brain was telling her to do it. "You're really lovely, you know?"

Cathal's smile at her words was genuine and warm, because being called 'lovely' was... well, it was lovely. He lifted his hand to squeeze her own where it rested on his arm and said, "ah, and I haven't made you my rhubarb gingernut cheesecake yet." Then, as a slightly more serious answer to her questions he said, "after I left home I decided I need to be more outgoing, see what I could do for the wee friendless boy I'd been."

Marcie rested her head against the back of the sofa, shifting her hand to curl around his fingers. She felt sorry for him being so alone. She at least had had a happy childhood. It was only later things had gone wrong. "I cannot wait to eat your cheesecake," she said, and smiled, rubbing her thumb across his fingertips. "I can't cook for shit. Mom says I could burn water." She laughed a little, nibbling the inside of her lower lip. Sitting here, holding hands with someone in this perfect evening, it felt so-

"Do you want to kiss me?" she asked, the alcohol making the thought become words. Gods, she missed someone wanting to kiss her...

Cathal opened his mouth to reply, but the surprise of the question made him lost for words. Did he want to kiss Marcie? She was touching him and he enjoyed her company and she was (without a doubt) a gorgeous woman. But from the first moment he'd met her he'd known two things:

1. She was Marco's daughter, and Marco was his friend.
2. She'd had a boyfriend who had very recently died.

Both of those facts meant that Cathal, even if he had momentarily considered any sort of 'moves', had quickly squashed them, and that any times he'd thought Marcie might be flirting before now, he had corrected himself that he was seeing things that weren't there.

But... well, maybe he hadn't been imagining things.

"Do you want me to kiss you?" Cathal asked, because - fuck - what if he still had the wrong end of this. What if Marcie was actually accusing him of acting horned up? Her turned his hand to run his fingers across hers though.

"I asked you first," she replied, her gaze going to his lips and thinking how nice they looked. "But I wouldn't have asked if I didn't." Maybe he was think about her dad being his friend and if that would affect anything. Maybe he just wasn't that into her. "Not saying you have to. Just... it'd be nice, if you did."

This was a far cry from the shouting and goading that had been a precursor to her and Tragos hooking up that first time. A very, very far cry from that.

How many drinks had Marcie had? Cathal was doing the quick mental maths on that, but he didn't think it had been that many. Enough to be slightly buzzed, perhaps, but not enough that it would be taking advantage.

Cathal gave her a small but warm smile and leaned towards her, lifting on hand and putting it against her cheek. He look in her face like that for a moment, admiring the curve of her lips, and then said, "yes. I'd like to kiss you."

And so he did, leaning in to gently kiss Marcie, his hand still on her cheek.

The thrill of the first time, the rush of butterflies taking off in her stomach, felt so nice as she closed her eyes and leaned into it. The kiss was exactly how she'd been imagining it would go, but the hand on her cheek was a bonus.

As their lips parted, she sighed softly, eyelids still low. "Maybe again," she said, trying to keep this perfect moment in time.

Cathal hadn't quite realised how much he did want to kiss her, not until that moment when their lips had touched. (Was it just that it had been a long time since he'd kissed anyone?) But as he ended the kiss, he felt a pang of regret, and so Marcie's words were well welcome to his ears.

He moved his hand upwards so that he could brush her hair off her face and tuck it gently behind her ear. "As you wish," he whispered, before kissing her again and shifting a little closer on the couch. He wasn't going to push anything here, but there was something enticing about kissing a girl he was still getting to know beside a fire, the sounds of voices all around them.

MArcie had the thought of, Jesse is going to be surprised, but it didn't bother her. Cathal smelled nice this close up, and his lips were soft and undemanding. She realised she was holding her breath and made herself relax into it, the tip of her tongue brushing gently against his lips, her hand resting on his thigh. She wanted to climb into his lap, but she held off because she didn't want to break this moment, and please the gods, let this not end in a hurry.

Cathal felt the moment when Marcie relaxed further into the kiss, and it urged him forward as well. As they kissed, Cathal slid his fingers gently up into her hair, his tongue finding hers as his unoccupied hand touched her other cheek.

Gods, he was hot, and his kisses were hot too. Marcie let out a little sigh of pleasure and shifted closer to him, her leg crossing his as she lifted a hand to his face.

At last, she found it in her to stop kissing for a moment, although she didn't pull back. "You're a really good kisser," she said softly, her fingers stroking along the edge of his jaw, through his facial hair (not quite stubble, not quite beard, but still suited him.) "I've heard you're good with your hands too."

The little sound Marcie made was intoxicating, more than any of the beers he'd had tonight. When they broke the kiss, Cathal didn't move back any further than Marcie did. He smiled at her words thought. "'Good kisser' wasn't a compliment I was expecting to hear tonight," he admitted, before kissing her again. Because, well, she thought he was a good kisser. "Nor anythin' about my hands," he added, running a thumb over her cheek as he pulled back enough to look at her. "God," he said a little breathlessly, "you're so gorgeous."

Oh she could listen to him compliment her in that accent all damn day. "Gorgeous," she murmured, copying the way he said it, rolling the R across her tongue. If he could make an engine purr, imagine what he could do for her. And okay, she'd had three beers and was feeling good and a little horny, but she knew she'd still feel the same tomorrow. "Not as gorgeous as you."

He couldn't help but smile at the way she copied his accent, even though she was no where near the first woman to do so. He loved the effect it had on American woman and he'd had far more success on the dating front in American than he'd ever bad back home. (Or maybe part of that was just that he'd been so young and insecure in Ireland, but he was a grown man now.)

"Impossible," Cathal said, running his hand through her hair. "I'd find it hard to believe you're not one of the most beautiful girls in any room." And then, because she definitely seemed to be into it, he leaned in to kiss her again.

It felt like now they'd started, they couldn't stop, and that was very alright with Marcie. She kissed him back, pressing closer, half in his lap. She wanted his strong arms around her, making her feel desired and safe. He smelled of cologne and car oil and it smelled amazing.

She pretty much forgot where she was, that there was anyone else around them at all.

Cathal wasn't managing to forget quite so completely where they were. Cathal, after all, had to live in this town and be the one they would be gossiping about later. Cathal had worked had to fit into a niche of 'very respectable gentleman' and he wasn't sure that making out around a campfire was the right look.

So when he started feeling the temptation to move the hand that had found her waist a little further north to her breast, Cathal figured it was time to stop himself.

He smiled at her and let out a deep breath. "You are- you're really somethin'," he told her. "And as much as I'm enjoying this very much, I think I'm gonna put the brakes on for tonight."

Well, when she put it like that... why indeed? She her her hand in his hair and she was biting her lip and her cheeks were a little more flushed now and what would be the harm in-

No, there could be a lot of harm.

He groaned, reluctant to not kiss her again. He took her hand in his and kissed her, looking up over it with sincere eyes. "I know that you've had a rough time of late," he said carefully, "and I don't want to be mistake you make in the heat of the moment and then regret. If did you wrong, your da would have me run out of town. But don't think that I'm not very interested in you right now. I'd have to be mad not to be."

She stared back at him, and slowly sat back, her body cooling with his words. "No, I've been lookin' at your butt for ages," she said, but the kindness and compassion he was showing her- the same as he showed for Kaden too- made her want to cry. "You're so amazing. How are you so amazing? You'd never do me wrong." She didn't want to let go of his hand, or pull away from him, or not have him gazing at her like that. She wanted to be loved again so badly, by someone who wasn't going to do something insane and break her heart. Cathal wasn't that guy, he couldn't be. He was proving it right now, although she wished he wasn't.

"Listen," Cathal said softly, kissing her hand again to keep her nearby and show he certainly didn't want her moving away. "If you're still checkin' out my butt in a couple days, then maybe we see what comes of it then. I just can't be the guy that takes you home if he's not utterly sure that it's what you'd want in the clear light o' day."

Cathal did worry that maybe this was coming across as patronising, as though he knew what Marcie needed better than she did, but he was being honest. Not only did he not what to be a shitty kind of guy, he also knew that in this very white town, he wouldn't get the second chances or benefit of the doubt that others might if Marcie even hinted to someone that she'd made a mistake.

Marcie listened, trying to take it all in, trying to read between the lines but not doing so well after three beers.

"You listen," she replied, leaning in a bit. "I don't know what anybody's told you about me but I'm a girl who knows exactly what she wants. I will see you in the light of day and I'm not changing my mind." She smirked, pulling his hand to her so she could kiss it, since that's all he wanted to do now, and she could respect that. The anticipation would only make the reward all the sweeter- assuming he didn't change his mind either.

He'd heard a few things about Marcie since she had returned to town. Gloria at the bookstore had told him that she didn't want to gossip, but that he should watch out around 'that type'. She got herself into the family way in high school but decided to not go through with it when that boyfriend of hers didn't want to settle down.

Cathal had thanked Gloria for the books he'd ordered - god, she was making it hard to support local - and suggested that perhaps that was all Marcie's business and not theirs.

And it was. Whatever had happened to her in high school and whatever had eventually driven her from this town, they were Marcie's own business. He was glad he hadn't grown up in a town like this where all his mistakes could be on display. The benefit of never being allowed to put down roots meant no one ever knew you: a blessing and a curse.

But Marcie's choice tonight to be here? Cathal liked that choice. "I love a woman who knows what she wants," Cathal promised her, with a slow wide smile. Her sure intensity was wonderful and he felt like she really was telling the truth: she'd still think this in the light of day.

"Good. Then it's settled." Marcie sat back properly, no longer half on top of him, putting the temptation at more of a distance. She was going to have to drink a bit more to get through the rest of this party, though. Sitting here with Cathal and not making out like teenagers was going to be quite the distraction.

Reaching over, she found a fresh beer for herself and raised it to him in a small toast. "To new friends," she said, with a wink. "Better tidy your room."

"Jokes on you," he smiled back at her, returning the wink. "My room's always tidy." But he couldn't deny the thrill at her words. Oh my, was he being persued? Cathal could get into that, and couldn't help but grin at her beside him, even as he reached for another beer of his own.

(But best to not go too heavy on that, he thought. Too many drinks and he couldn't guarantee that his sensible thoughts would remain the ones in charge.)
