Hecate was still an enigma to Will. Never seen, but seemingly ever-present, moving among gods and mortals, dispensing charms and offering protections and slaying monsters and, occasionally, turning people into celestial objects. Magic had always struck Will as strange and treacherous territory, something he couldn’t comprehend and therefore couldn’t defend himself against, and Hecate seemed to be nothing but magic. But if she was an enigma, she was a benevolent one. One thing he’d come to understand about her – at least, he thought he was right on this – was that she chose to stand on the side of the vulnerable and powerless. She chose mortals like Marcie and her poor kid friend over avenging gods. She chose women like Marian and Clio over violent, possessive men. She chose to defend them, and that… weird as it was to contemplate, that put her not a million miles from the Merry Men. Clio trusted her implicitly. Will… didn’t think she was wrong to. Which was more than he’d say of a lot of Greeks. Anyway, it didn’t much matter who he trusted. The only thing of import just now was that they had the same end in mind: finding Clio and seeing her safe. If Hecate had to slit his gut and read his entrails to that end, hell, he’d let her. (He didn’t think that was anywhere near on the table. Hecate had a deliberate way about her; he got the impression she didn’t go for casual harm. Apollo, on the other hand…) He made it to the campus a little before the strike of twelve. Habit made him stop at the edge of the quadrangle, cautious eyes seeking out dark corners and potential ambush points. It was empty, silent but for the ever-present sounds of traffic. The moon gleamed sharp and silver as the edge of a sickle in the night sky. Within minutes he was outside Clio’s building, waiting in the shadow of the entrance for Hecate to appear. |
