WHO: Apollo and Cin
WHEN: Sunday evening
WHERE: The Hole and his penthouse
WHAT: This is NOT a date
WARNINGS: Talk of attempted suicide

Apollo was feeling pretty pleased with himself when he arrived at Cin's place. There was just something encouraging about inspiring terror in your enemies, something wholesome and satisfying about it.

He had to admit he was a little bit disappointed in Tragos' intelligence, though. Burying an immortal god a couple of blocks over from where you actually lived? Iiiidiot. Well, no one ever said Ares picked 'em for their brains.

But, hey, the boy's stupid choices had led him to Cin, and Apollo was pretty confident his stupid choices weren't over. The future wasn't an exact science, so he couldn't be one hundred percent sure, but past behaviour was a pretty good indicator of future performance, so Apollo's hopes were high.

He swung himself out of his car, having parked right up Cin's driveway incase the little shits decided to slash his tyres while he was inside, and rapped a funky rhythm on her door.

The events of Friday had deeply rattled Cin, and even by the time she got back home she still felt cold and unsteady and sick. One of the coins had gotten itself open in her pocket and made a mess of melted chocolate in there, something she had to stand over the laundry sink and scrub at while Jake tried to get her to come watch how well he was doing on his video game.

Maybe if no one else had been home she would have let herself break down a little more, but that wasn't an option.

On Friday night, Cin dreamed about Amelia for the first time in years, and on Saturday the dream was less startling but still disturbing her sleep. A few times over the weekend she wondered if she should text Gabe, but told herself that it wasn't any of her business. Hadn't she done enough? She'd cut him down, hadn't she?

Cancelling on Archie seemed like too much work, and so she went ahead with it. Maybe she should have cancelled anyway, because she was on edge and aggravated. Brody hadn't stopped bothering her at lunch, needy and not letting her have a moment's peace, and she'd snapped at him to fuck off and go entertain himself.

Yelling at Brody always made her feel bad, because Brody never yelled back. Brody just looked at her with big eyes and did whatever he was told. He was too soft for his own good, and it was like kicking a puppy. Cin had never ever been that soft, and she was glad of it.

When Archie showed up at the door, Cin's tone was antagonistic from the first words: "why you lyin'? you don't have any 'friends' around here."

Apollo took a moment to adjust to this attack, and he raised his hands in front of him, a casual acceptance that she had a point. "Yeah alright, 'friends' is a bit strong. That guy Tragos, down the road? Me and his girlfriend are like this," Apollo crossed his fingers with a grin. "He's a bit of a cock, though."

Cin tried to picture Tragos and Archie even standing in the same room together, and she couldn't manage it. Any of the Murphys putting up with this pretty rich boy seemed impossible to imagine. "He's my boyfriend's brother," Cin found herself volunteering.

That surprised him, genuinely. "No kidding?" he said, looking down at her as if there was any reason for her to be lying to him, but no, it seemed like the truth. "Huh, small world," he said, as his mind stored that away. Cin was dating one of Ares' morons? Mental! This made him feel even more pleased to be taking her out. He could show her a much better time than any of the War Dicks. "You ready for another dazzling night on the town?"

Cin was dressed like she was ready to go out, as though that might encourage her to feel more up to it. The dress was red and gold, flattering and tightly fitted. She'd worn it before - a few times in fact - but she liked it more than some of his other choices. But even the dress didn't make her want to sit among rich assholes and show off, not tonight.

"No," she eventually said, the edge of rudeness still in her voice. Then it softened a little. "Can we go somewhere quiet instead?"

Another moment of genuine surprise, this one curving his mouth into a smile. "Suuure," he said, shifting aside so she could step out of her front door, opening his arm like he was presenting her with the whole world. That little hint of softness under all her brass was delicious, and he did adore her unpredictability. Weeks and weeks of dinners where every time she stipulated that it wasn't a date, and now she was asking to go somewhere 'quieter'?

Man, Apollo was just digging every part of tonight.

"I'm not hitting on you," Cin said, the firmness returning to her tone as she made that point clear right from the beginning. She made her way towards his car and pulled open the door. "But I don't want to deal with a restaurant full of people tonight."

Ahh - there it was.

Well, he supposed it wouldn't be that easy, after all. Girls like Cin didn't just turn on a dime, even for gods like him. It was one of the things that made her so appealing. Cin Warmoth, what a queen.

"Noted," he said, giving her the smile he gave her every time she told him the were not dating. Your wish is my command. He slid into the drivers seat, starting the engine. "How about we get something delivered to the penthouse?" He'd love to see her there again, with the city spread up beneath her. Just... aesthetically, that image was very pleasing.

"That sounds okay," Cin nodded, looking out the window. "You can still choose what we eat. I don't care. Actually," she frowned, thinking about it, "I do. I want pasta." It would be killer on the carbs and calories, but Cin thought maybe pasta might be just what she needed. Surely some sort of rich filling pasta would be enough to forget about everything that had happened.

Apollo thought of the Italian that he and Calliope had shared, thought of his gorgeous Muse asking him if he'd taken Cin there yet. "I know just the place," he said, letting his foot grow heavy on the accelerator to drag them both out of this place. His wheels cut through the puddles, leaving small tidal ways in his wake to disrupt the dead leaves and deader trash that gathered around the gutters.

At the first set of traffic lights, he unlocked his phone and brought up the menu, passing it over to Cin. "Choose anything," he said. "I bet I can time this perfectly so we arrive at home the same moment as the food."

Cin sunk down into the comfortable seat of Archie's car, scrolling through the menu and picking a handful of things she wanted to try. She'd gotten used to abusing his money and sometimes only having a mouthful of each thing before trying the next. If he was offering, then why not spend that money he was so desperate to throw around in front of her? She deserved it just as much as he did.

Once she'd picked, she waited for the next time he stopped at the lights and handed it back. She'd considered sneaking a look at his contacts or his messages, but she found she didn't care enough to snoop. People like Archie didn't have interesting friends. Who needed to be interesting when they were rich?

With the phone out of her hand, Cin turned her attention to out the window, resting her head against the glass.

Apollo added a couple of extra dishes, he just loved a margarita pizza, he didn't care how basic it made him, shit was good. He also knew how much Cin relied on taking home any extra food, and he liked the idea that in the next couple of days her kid siblings would be eating better because of him.

He had timed their arrival almost perfectly. Apollo had enough time to step inside, shed his coat, and set two wine glasses on the bench before the food arrived. He smiled; it was still pretty perfect. "You can do the honours," he said, sliding the bottle across the bench toward Cin as he went to fetch the food from the door.

She found a bottle opener in one of the drawers and opened the cork with the ease of someone who had been drinking cheap bottles of wine at parties since she was thirteen. This bottle was considerably more high class than the terrible white wines she'd been chugging in her youth. She poured them both a properly full glass and was taking a sip of hers when he returned.

Then she swept up one of the food bags and took it over towards the coffee table that waited between those tall impressive windows, already decided on that being where they were eating without any of Archie's input.

She tried not to get distracted by the view, but she did, just a little.

He enjoyed that she she took the lead from time to time, and joined her at the coffee table, checking her out while she checked out that view. There was something deeply attractive about the clean, curvy lines of her dress against the clean, straight lights in his penthouse, and he tried not to get distracted by that view.

But he did, just a little.

He tore off the end of a stick of garlic bread and leaned back in the chair, one ankle crossed loosely over his other leg. "What's different tonight?" he asked, curious about her need for quiet.

Cin reached out for a piece of garlic bread of her own. She didn't know whether she decided on her next words consciously, or whether they had just been waiting so firmly right behind her teeth that the slightest push brought them out. She did know that she was looking out the window and not at Archie when she spoke them though.

"On Friday I stopped someone from killing himself. I had to cut the rope he was hanging from."

"Well shit," Apollo said, leaving his garlic bread in his hand instead of taking another bite. He sat up a little more, his propped up foot slipping down to the floor, but he didn't otherwise move toward her. "That's a bit heroic."

"It wasn't," she quickly said, and her tone made it clear she had taken the word 'heroic' as more of an insult than anything else. Heroes were not a thing Cin believed in, and people who did good things were either doing them for their own gain or deeply stupid.

She stood up and walked over to the window, staring out it with a deep frown and her arms crossed. "I wasn't being some hero, I was just- it was instinct. I did it before I thought about it."

His brow creased gently at her reaction to the word, watching her as she moved away. She was a difficult one to compliment, unless it was about her looks; he'd never been able to get her to accept a compliment about her behaviour. She always seemed to think he was mocking her.

"Alright," he said, accepting this correction. He put his garlic bread right down, leaning forward and letting his hands dangle between his knees. "It's a big thing to have someone else's life in your hands, even for a moment, isn't it?"

"I didn't ask for that," she snapped, looking over her shoulder at him, eyes burning fiercely. She didn't know what she was hoping to achieve in telling Archie any of this, only that he'd asked and she couldn't keep it in.

She looked back out the window and shook her head. "He's not even my friend. He's just a guy I clean house for. He's not anything to me." And yet she'd cut him down, and she'd brought him a beer, and she'd helped him get onto his bed. He wasn't anything to her and yet she'd done that.

Apollo took his time before he replied, partially to give her the silence to carry on speaking, partially to give himself a moment to unpack her prickly and disturbed mood.

"Did he get angry at you?" he asked, trying to get a deeper reading of the situation.

She turned around to look at Archie, giving him a withering look. "You think I care if someone's angry at me?" Then she shrugged, as though this was all no big deal, as though it wasn't affecting her at all, as though it had just been another day in her life and nothing more. "He wasn't really angry," she said with less force. "He was just... sad. Just crying and fucked up."

Apollo was unwithered. He figured she cared a whole lot more than she wanted to admit - maybe not about the guy being angry, specifically, but what this guy had done in front of her clearly had an impact. Still, saying that out loud would only get his head bitten off. He shook his head instead, letting her carry on pretending if that's how she wanted to be.

When she spoke again he nodded, slowly. "Yeah," he agreed. "It's fucked up." He didn't offer anything more than agreement with her, though, he wanted to see what else she'd have to say.

Cin was silent for a very long time, just watching the lights of the cars moving below. "When I was sixteen," she said, still with her back to Archie, "my best friend hanged herself. I went to pick her up for school and she was just hanging from the fan in her bedroom. I tried to get her down, but she'd already been there all night."

Apollo stood up in a smooth and slow motion, stepping across the room toward her. He didn't get close, though, he just leaned his shoulder up against the glass and looked out across the city with her. "Someone I loved died in my arms," he told her, remembering the bright life of Hyacinth cut short in front of him. An accident, or a jealous interference from the West Wind. Either way, Hyacinth had died, and the mark it had left on Apollo remained. "Some people you can't save, no matter what."

"It fuckin' sucks," Cin said quietly, trying not to feel so hopeless about it. There was so much to feel hopeless about though: the way her life had gone, Barak in the hospital, Bailey planning to leave them all, Jake fucking up at school, Brody being too soft to make it. There had been one other thing constantly weighing on her, but Archie's presence in her life had gotten rid of that for now: money. Everything before meeting him had been all about how to stretch the money she didn't have to keep them all okay, and now it was easier.

It was nice to have one thing that was easier.

Apollo watched her for a while, this vulnerability was a part of her he hadn't seen before. But then, it had been a long time since he'd mentioned Hyacinth to anyone, especially a mortal. "Yeah, it does," he agreed with her. Even at the height of his power, he hadn't been able to stop Hyacinth dying.

He stepped back and retrieved their glasses from the coffee table, passing Cin hers before stepping back to his original spot, taking a mouthful of the wine.

Cin took her wine with a nod and then raised it to her lips, feeling as though parts of her were coming away tonight, as though all of the things that made her her were flying away at great speed, and she wasn't sure what would be left behind.

She was angry at Gabe for doing this to her, for putting her in the position where she'd done what she had done, for dragging up all these feelings she'd pushed down and let go of. She was angry at him for reminding her how easy and close death always was.

"My boyfriend's in hospital," she told Archie, looking over at him, though only moving her head a little. "He's in a gang and in December something happened with the leader. He crossed him or something, and got himself beaten almost to death. So fuckin stupid. So now he's basically a vegetable. He sits there in a wheelchair, can't even talk right anymore."

Apollo raised both eyebrows into his glass. Her boyfriend must have really pissed off Ares to be reduced to that. Ares had such a hard-on about dying a warrior's death. The shame of dying slowly in hospital was enormous.

Huh. December, though. The same month Tragos killed Hecate? What was the connection there? He'd ask Cin for more, but doubted she'd have any details.

"Well that fucking sucks too," he said. "You must really love him, to have not given up on him."

"I do," Cin said, her words strong and true. "I've loved him since I was thirteen when just thought I was some dumb kid. There's nothing I wouldn't do for Barak, and one day he's going to get better." The last part was said with the sort of ferocity that one used when they were trying to will their words to be true, even against impossible odds. She didn't know how, but Barak was going to get better and they were going to be together again.

This was the most passion Apollo had ever seen Cin use when talking about anyone, and it made him want to step in, offer to heal the dumb fuck just to make her happy. That was crazy on multiple levels, he wasn't out to her, he'd be shooting himself in the foot romantically, and her boyfriend belonged to Ares.

But this woman, this loyal, passionate queen, deserved a better life. "That's why I'm studying medicine, to fix people like that," he said. "I hope one day he gets better. You deserve someone who loves you," he raised his glass to her for a moment, then drank from it.

Cin knew that he was studying medicine, but she'd always sort of assumed he was in it for the money. Doctors made bank, after all. It was the sort of job you did if daddy was rich: doctors, lawyers, stock market dudes. But she found she believed him right now when he was saying he was in it to help people. Could never have been Cin - why would she want to be helping people she didn't even know? He own family needed enough of her attention.

"I'm hungry," Cin said, taking a sip of her wine and going back to sit down. "Thanks for dinner," she added, not looking at him and slightly uncomfortable. Cin usually felt she was owed things, but maybe right now it could pay to say a thank you.

"Anytime," Apollo said, joining her on the chairs again. "I'm always happy to buy you dinner, I like our weekly meet ups," he was careful this time not to say dates. He didn't want her guard getting up again. This Cin, open and sharing, was a Cin he wanted to explore, not spook.
