WHO Will Stutely and Fairytales
WHEN Sunday 15 November
WHERE Elaine's house
WHAT Delivering a wardrobe
WARNINGS TBA, prob nothing
Enchanted wardrobes, it turned out, looked rather a lot like your ordinary everyday wardrobes. Or at least they did when Will Stutely made them. To be fair, it was currently an ordinary everyday wardrobe; he wasn't the one who'd be doing the enchanting. Maybe by the time Elaine was finished with it, it would be shimmering like something out of a Disney movie, but right now it was just a good, solidly built ash wardrobe, simple and sturdy, no embellishment beyond some understated cornice work and a few coats of varnish to bring out the rich texture in the grain. Of all the ways they'd discussed countering the Sheriff's assaults, Will would never have imagined carpentry would factor in, but Elaine wasn't exactly a conventional ally. And, hell, amid all the tentative planning and circular conversations about prophecies, he had to admit it had felt good to throw himself into some honest, straightforward handiwork. Feeling the flaws in the wood yield beneath his sander and watching something solid and functional come together from a pile of raw timber, it was impossible not to feel a quiet bloom of hope. A sense that they were actually moving in some direction, and not just stuck in the mud. He'd rented a van for the afternoon, the wardrobe being too heavy and bulky to deliver any other way. After parking out the front of Elaine's, he carefully eased the bubble-wrapped wardrobe onto a platform trolley and secured it, before wheeling up it to the front door. |
