WHO Luna Estrella & Tinsel Gloria (with a dash of Patroclus)
WHEN Friday night
WHERE Fusion Blues
WHAT Meeting new friends with weird names
WARNINGS tba, probably not much

Luna was up for making new friends, especially with a girl who was the daughter of Santa Claus. It was the weirdest parentage she'd heard of yet, but she was pretty sure it wouldn't be in the winner in the end. There was always something weirder right around the corner- and while she wasn't in the position she once had been to learn about them, it truly seemed that once your eyes had been opened to that world, that world never left you alone.

Luna liked that though. She didn't want to lose the magic, not after being allowed to taste it.

So she headed off to Fusion Blues, the bar belonging to (self confessed) Trojan War Hero Patroclus. Blues wasn't really her thing, but getting out of the house was definitely her thing.

She arrived dressed in a black playsuit and went over to the bar, where Tinsel said they'd meet. Sitting on the stool, legs crossed, she ordered herself an espresso martini.

Tinsel Gloria loved her brother, she truly did, but today he'd been doing her head in. She'd decided to work from home because of excessively distracting period cramps, and it was much easier to deal with them in a blanket with a hottie (not that kind, unfortunately) and deal with emails from her bed than it was to make herself go into the office. And luckily, she happened to be in charge of the office, so she could do what she liked.

So many fundraisers. So many charity drives. And then the big happening at the start of December, both fundraiser and celebration of all the hard work finally being put into action throughout the month ahead. Something to reward the staff- and who knows, maybe the Man Himself would make an appearance. (He would. Tinsel was going to make sure he appeared if she had to bribe her mother and sister to put on the pressure. She hadn't been pinned down to the New York office just to lose the best guest to the LA event.)

But Henry had been in a mood or something, maybe he was vibing her hormones, cos he was grumping about the place. He'd even pulled out his old Guitar Hero game and was standing in the lounge in his underpants and socks, jamming quite loudly with a joint hanging from the corner of his mouth. He was feeling the build-up to the Big Day too, but he dealt with it in a much different way to Tinsel.

So. Jeans, red low-top Chucks and a green lace top to show a modicum of effort. Thankfully the cramps had abated, at least with the help of ibuprofen, and moon cup locked and unloaded, so she was raring to meet a new person and make a friend who hopefully smelled less of weed.

The bar was good, she appreciated a more chill vibe sometimes, and she went over to the bar too, glancing around at all the people waiting to see if any fit her mental description of Luna. There was another woman who looked about her age, also glancing around, and Tinsel grinned as their eyes met.

"Hey! Wow, look at you! Stunning! Oh my god I would have dressed up more. Luna, right? Hi!"

"Oh no, please," Luna said, brushing away the idea that Tinsel was underdressed. "I'm barely even wearing makeup and your top is so cute." Both were true: Luna would wear the crap out of that top, and she was also only wearing mascara and a hint of eyeliner today.

"Come join me and get a drink," Luna smiled at her. Then a little quieter she added, "I don't think this guy behind the bar is Patroclus."

Tinsel climbed up onto the stool beside Luna and looked appraisingly at the bartender. "Hmm... he doesn't look that godly," she agreed, then turned back to Luna and looked her up and down.

"Okay, I bet everyone comments on the tats so lets get it over with. They look killer, I wish I had a tat, you look like a Blitzen." She nodded approvingly.

Tinsel was right, of course: the tattoos were always what people commented on, whether they were people she was meeting or complete strangers on the subway.

Luna grinned. "A Blitzen, huh?" It was clearly a compliment from the tone, even if she had just been called a cartoon reindeer.

Tinsel groaned and rolled her head back. "I have a speech impediment. I inherited it from my old man somehow, although he can but chooses not to. I can't swear, it's so embarrassing." She shook her head, but she had lived with it since she had learned what swear words were, so she was used to it. "I substitute festive words instead, I can't help it. I can't say bad- donkey, you know," she waved a hand, hoping Luna would get it a lot quicker than Patroclus had. "So- Blitzen. One of my favourite reindeer, by the way, so a total compliment."

"That's so weird," Luna said, but there was a smile as she spoke and her tone was clearly fascinated. She only knew a few demi-gods and it seemed like some of them picked up such random things from their parents. "Then I will take Blitzen as the compliment it is, or else you might think I'm a real sleigh-crasher."

Tinsel looked at Luna a moment, and then laughed, amused at the effort. "Sleigh-crasher, good! My brother can swear, and he got the normal name. How unfair is that?" she said, turning back to the bartender to order a cider. "So, Luna Estrella, tell me a bit about you. Have you always lived in New York? Where abouts are you living?"

"Men always get it easier, don't they?" Luna said with a bit of her eyeroll.

The questions about herself were still something Luna was working out how to tell, now that Peitho and Hermes were out of the picture. "Nah, I've only been here for a couple years, and very freshly moved into a new Manhattan apartment. I was mostly in LA before, but I like New York better. And you? Are you-" she paused knowing it was probably dumb before she asked it but unable to stop herself. She sighed and went ahead: "Are you from the North Pole?"

Tinsel shook her head. "Nnno. No. I'm sorry, I'm not laughing at you. I was born in America. In Aspen, actually. Colorado. Do you know that there they have an almost 100% chance of snow at Christmas?" She thanked the bartender as her drink was placed on the bar in front of her. "I'm in Manhattan now too, 34th Street would you believe?" She grinned at Luna. "Are you far from there?"

"Trying to stalk me already, huh?" Luna asked Tinsel, raising an eyebrow as she took a sip of her drink. They did live rather close to each other, it turned out. Luna was on 57th Street, which was only a twenty minute walk or so from 34th. "Aspen sounds pretty Christmasy." Luna only knew about it from movies, having only been to Colorado that one disastrous time.

"Oh yeah. Yeah. It's the one time of year that the Lodge is full of all the Clauses. The rest of the time we're spread out, but the annual pilgrimage is mandatory. Us three- me, Henry, Merrilee, my older brother Garland and his son Alfie and his kids who are a bit younger than Merry, and... oh my god you don't need the whole family tree but you get the picture. There are a lot of us and we all work for the company. And Mom and Dad at the head of the table with the full works, turkey, cranberry, stuffing, everything. It's epic. Giant tree, lights, tinsel, music- it was my absolute favourite day as a kid because I got to spend the whole day with my parents." Tinsel sighed and took a mouthful of cider. "Anyway. Do you like living in New York? I'm not sure if I do or not yet."

"That sounds big and exhausting but fun," Luna said, trying to remember the last time she'd had any big Christmas event with lots of people. It was probably a few years before she left home, some almost a decade now.

"I love it here," Luna said, without having to think about it. "I went through a break up last month and I thought about moving away, getting out of their city, you know? But... I couldn't do it. This place is a mess and I'm so into it."

Tinsel immediately looked sympathetic, reaching out to pat Luna's arm consolingly. "I totally get it. Totally. I went through a bad breakup not long ago too, I was living in LA, and I just-" She mimed crashing and burning. "My mom made me relocate to here since then she could make me live with Henry and pretend like he's the sort of big brother who takes charge of things. Maybe you could show me some good places to go? I miss nightlife, I miss having friends to go out with."

Luna smiled at the arm pat, sort of glad that someone else was in the same boat as her. Not quite the same boat, of course. She didn't think Tinsel had broken up with the gods she worshipped.

"I get the nosedive," Luna agreed with a heavy nod. "I lost my job and home at the same time so... I'm still sort of in the reckless partying all night phase of it. But the only club I really know is this goth dance club in Brooklyn. You much for goth clubs?" she asked Tinsel with a grin, have a suspicion to what the answer was there.

"Oh man, that sucks," Tinsel said, shaking her head. "Were you living with them and got kicked out? Oh that's rough. Well... I wouldn't describe myself as goth as such, buu-uut I would describe myself as desperate to try new things? Work hard, play hard, that's my motto." She winked and threw up a finger gun. "Mom said I need to settle down and get more sleep but meh."

"Yeah, it was a whole crappy thing," Luna agreed, wrinkling up her nose.

"Desperate to try new things, huh?" Luna mused out loud. "Like... get a tattoo? You were saying you wished you had one, what's stopping you?"

"Ahh..." She waved a hand. "I want to be CEO of the company one day. Henry can't handle it and I've been working so hard for it. My nephew Alfie is my main competition. See, only one or two generations down from Santa have what we affectionately refer to as "The Twinkle", aka, the ability to sense Naughty and Nice. And only someone with the Twinkle can be trusted to keep things going the way Dad wants them. So every thirty years or so they have a few more kids to keep things going. And the CEO has to be squeaky clean. Anything off-colour is a bad look for a company built on charity and wholesomeness and that traditional Christmas. I'm just lucky that LGBT rights have advanced enough that I can be openly gay and not have it be a problem, most of the time." There were older relations in the Claus line-up that refused to acknowledge her sexuality still.

She sighed, but then got a cheeky smirk. "But, I was thinking if I did, I'd get "Let It Snow" on my lower back."

Luna sympathized with Tinsel's troubles although had never been in that position herself. Luna had been fully tattooed since she was nineteen and there was no respectable line of work demanding otherwise.

"Do it!" Luna said with great encouragement and a raising of her glass. "It'd be cute, and who in the boardroom is ever gonna see that? There's no professional reason your lower back is going to be on display, so go wild!"

Tinsel snorted. "That's a joke! I'm not getting a festive tramp stamp!" she chortled. "It's doesn't even work, because I've never had sex with a guy anyway! No, seriously, maybe I'd get three baubles, for me, Henry and Merry. Just three little ornaments, hanging off the family Christmas tree. I like your chest piece at the top there. The rose is nice."

She didn't even send nudes, she was that worried about cracking the family business. Not that she had anyone to send them to now anyway. Clem had asked, though, when she was traveling, and then implied that if she'd been more open then Clem wouldn't have felt the need to stray. But whatever. It was over now.

"Hey, I've got some truly terrible tattoos on my body," Luna said, raising her hands in surrender (although the one with the glass raised slightly less.) "I'm not gonna judge anyone's choice in tramp stamp. But the bauble idea would be really sweet."

"It's an apple, actually," Luna said, leaning in towards Tinsel and pulling the edges of her shirt apart to show the full design. "Roses and snakes and thorns- all very clichΓ©, but luckily I still like it."

"Mega Blitzen," Luna agreed as she sat back, her smile bright.

Past Tinsel's shoulder, Luna spotted a man that seemed far too attractive to actually be real and felt momentarily thrown off. She dragged her eyes back to Tinsel and leaned in towards her again. "Hey, I think that's the guy."

Patroclus had been in the back, dealing with the inventory. When he stepped back out onto the floor, there were a few new people at the bar. He sidled over to them, and flashed them a wide smile. "Hello, ladies! Everything alright here? Need anything else?"

A slightly conspiratorial smile was shared with Tinsel, before Luna turned her attention fully to the attractive bartender. She leaned in a little, with a warm flirty smile, and said, "hello, Achaean Patroclus."

Immediately, Patroclus's cheeks burned bright red, because these had to be the people he was speaking to when he had misunderstood the slang term 'ding-dong'. "Oh gods and monsters," he laughed at himself. "Yes, that's me, ridiculous old man Patroclus! Which one of you did I make an ass of myself to? Or does it just count as both of you," he winked. "Because people I make an ass of myself to get free nachos."
