WHO: Thomas and Jamie Kemp, possibly Lena and Roxanna later?
WHAT: Just worry
WHEN: Thursday evening
WHERE: Their home
WARNINGS: TBA

Thomas was already regretting flushing his meds, and not just because he had fumbled the container and ended up clogging the toilet with it. He hurt all over, but he didn't want to become a slave to opiates again. He was just going to have to try to deal on IBProfen, though he had already taken up to the daily dosage and it currently wasn't doing all that much to mask the pain.

He had his phone and had been talking to Jamie on it, which was probably for the best. He was now in his bedroom, but with only one unbroken arm, he couldn't really get back into his bed by himself, let alone do anything else. He hated that his son would have to help him, but he needed to swallow his pride and just let it happen.

"Besides offering people rides in your electric wheel chair?" Jamie asked, laughing a little. "But yes, clearly you're having a party. In all seriousness, though, do you need anything before you get settled in?"

"To be fair, that started off innocent," Thomas protested. "I don't need anything, I just want to lie down." He wasn't going to admit to being in pain because he didn't want Jamie to know. He wasn't going to take any more opiates. He absolutely was not.

"I'm sorry you have to do this. Lena had class, and she wanted to visit Aidan and I thought I would be okay in the chair until she got back."

"About a third of your stories start that way," Jamie informed him. "But alright. If you change your mind later, you can always text me. Or shout, whatever."

"It's fine, Dad, I promise," he went on. "I can't imagine that chair is terribly comfortable. If I help you stand, do you think you can get over to the bed?"

"Well, you have a point there," Thomas conceded. A lot of his stories did start off with innocent enough intentions, but it wasn't liked he could be blamed when they went off course, considering how he'd been raised.

"Yeah, I think so." Sure, both his legs were broken, but he had on casts that were meant to holdup. It was more that he couldn't push himself up with only one non-broken arm. Things would be so much easier in a few weeks when he could use both his arms.

"Just...I guess try not to drop me? Though if you did, it could be revenge for those times I accidentally hit your head on door frames. It was never hard but I always felt really bad."

"I will do my best not to drop you," Jamie promised, hooking his dad's arm over his shoulder so he could push up with the non-broken one. "And don't feel bad, I'm pretty sure every parent has done that at least once." He looked down at his father. "Just tell me when you're ready to move."

"Ready," Thomas said, gritting his teeth against the pain as Jamie helped him up and then over to the bed. The blankets were already pulled back, which was handy, and Thomas could sit and sort of shimmy in. When he leaned back against the pillows, he let out a sigh of relief. "Oh, that's good. Did you know lying down is the best?"

"I have that thought every time my alarm goes off for school," Jamie agreed, pulling the blankets up and over his dad's legs. He took a seat on the edge of the bed. "Real talk, though. How are you feeling?"

Thomas had always refused to lie to Jamie, so he had to be artfully cagey and hope Jamie didn't notice.

It rarely worked.

"Well the doctors said my arm should heal up in about a month which is good," he said, avoiding the issue completely. "I'm sorry I scared you in the hospital again. Apparently it's my life's work to be as dramatic as possible." He hated thinking that his wife and son would have been standing by his bedside and told to expect that he might not wake up. If he had been in that situation he would have had a breakdown.

Jamie just looked at him. "I'm pretty sure your superpower is linguistic tap-dancing, since that's not what I asked and you know it," he said, sighing. "And it's hardly your fault some idiot decided to go drink and drive, even though that's an extraordinarily stupid choice. Hell, it's never your fault when you end up in the hospital, so I don't think I'd call you dramatic, either."

"Ah, you've been too wise for my linguistic tap-dancing since you were about eight." Though he still didn't answer the question. "I know it wasn't my fault, I just...I hate making you worry." Hell, he hated that Jamie was probably worried now, but there wasn't much he could do about it. "You have this face you make. Been making it since you were so small and your head was so big. I mean comparatively..."

"I'm pretty sure I'm making it now, since you still haven't really told me how you're feeling," Jamie replied. "But I also know that poking repeatedly at things with can produce mixed results, so...I'll guess 'probably not awesome' and proceed from there."

Thomas groaned a little and finally nodded. "I know you're probably asking because I flushed the pills. I just- I didn't want to end up in a bad place again. I can't take them."

Jamie nodded too. "Yeah. I mean, I understand why you'd want to get rid of them, but at the same time...Dad, you've got a broken arm and two broken legs. No one should have to deal with that with just Advil and a sense of humor."

"And broken ribs," he said before realising that wasn't helpful. "Heh. I know. I guess I just- The pain is better than disappointing you again," Thomas admitted. He just knew if he kept taking the codeine he wouldn't ever want to stop. It didn't give him the same high as Vicodin, but he would start to chase a high by taking more and it would all end horribly.

"Thank you for further proving my point," Jamie sighed. "Oh, Dad. You're breaking yourself in half worrying about me, and if you break anything else, they'll have to put you in traction. I love you, and I'm fucking proud that you're trying so hard to stay sober. But is there something else, maybe not quite as potent as what they gave you, but better than Advil? Because healing without any relief sounds like a hellish couple of weeks."

"I always worry about you," Thomas said gently. He reached out and gave Jamie's shoulder a squeeze with his good hand. "There's marijuana," Thomas said with a shrug. "And to be honest I'm not beyond thinking about it right now. I already took all the IB Profen I can and I still have to fall asleep tonight somehow." Then he gave Jamie a look, "that uh...wasn't me asking you to procure me some weed, son. Just in case that wasn't obvious." Sure medical marijuana was legal in New York, and chances were he would be on it later in his life when his Huntington's symptoms had started. They didn't prescribe it for auto accident pain though.

"Yeah, well, I'm pretty sure that goes both ways," Jamie said heavily. "Might be worth looking into, at least to help you get to sleep."

Good thing his father's next statement had come when it did, because Jamie had been about to open his mouth and say, 'I actually know a guy who knows a guy, if you're serious'. But he didn't really want to go down the path of questions that would bring up, so he simply kept his mouth closed.

Thomas chuckled and then winced as it caused his ribs to ache fitfully. "Urgh. I'm not opposed to it, but I am also not sending my son on a mission to break the law, so-" Thomas smiled at Jamie in a way that he hoped was reassuring. "You don't need that on your record, if they even do that any more."

"Hmm, clean record versus helping my family." Jamie held up both hands, mimicking the pans of a scale. "But, I know you'll worry about that until I tell you I'm not leaving tonight. Which is the truth, by the way, I'm tired and don't feel like going anywhere."

"Good stuff," Thomas smiled at Jamie. He knew his son would do anything he asked him to, but the very idea of sending Jamie out to buy him weed was beyond ridiculous. If someone brought him some, however, he was not going to say no.

"Want to climb in?" Thomas said, waving to the bed. "We can watch something?" Then he tilted his head in curiosity, "have you ever smoked pot before?"

"You have the best plans," Jamie told him, though it was slightly garbled by the fact that he was yawning. He lay down on the other side of the bed, wiggling a bit to settle himself in.

"A couple times," he said, after a moment. "At some parties I went to. It made me hungry. Or giggly."

"Yeah, that's certainly a draw-back to having some now, it makes me giggly too and that would hurt. Probably wouldn't care though." He raised his eyebrows then, "if we do get some, want to have some with me? And understand that I would never even think of this if I wasn't bed-ridden, but desperate times, hmm? We could watch Nightmare Before Christmas while high."

"It might help you sleep, though," Jamie countered. He raised an eyebrow right back. "See, when I was in high school, this would've been a 'coolest dad ever' moment. And I mean, watching Nightmare while high would probably be awesome. Minus the Oogie Boogie Man, who's just creepy and awful."

"And sleep would be good. I actually think one of Lena's friends has a prescription-" Thomas kind of trailed off and then he shook his head and looked back at Jamie, "well I'll protect you from Oogie Boogie. Even with two broken legs."
